Andrew
on the last hand if the roles where reversed – would you have bet the A on the river.

I don’t think I’d bet the turn with bare Ax.

Great series Andrew…I noticed in the first episode you explain how checking weak Ax hands on the AK5 board is a good balance, but you also mention how a strong Ax hand would be OK to value bet that flop. But in this 2nd episode you have a strong AQ hand that hits the AJ8 flop and you still check before value betting the turn and river. What makes it so obvious to check the flop on the 2nd example with AQ compared to holding AQ on the AK5 flop in the first episode?
Foucault
Good question. “Strong” is a relative term. In the example you mention, I 3-bet pre-flop, so AQ is really one of the worst Ax I could have on that board (and, perhaps more importantly, I am unlikely to dominate my opponents’ range of Ax hands). AK and AJ would both be better betting hands here, and although I might occasionally show up with A5s or something, that doesn’t amount to enough combos to balance a checking range.
Another good way of thinking about it is that AQ is not a three-street hand on AJ8. And because the board is relatively static, I’d prefer to backload my value. You can learn more about this concept in my Getting Paid series here on TPE.

Thanks Andrew. I missed it was a 3 bet pot & understand it’s possible he has a stronger Ax hand in that spot now, onto episode 3…..

On the last hand where you bluff Q10 on the river what hands do you expect him to fold? It’s pretty tough for you to have an A and I wouldn’t think you would bet a king on the river so I think you can make a decent case for calling your river bet with just a 9. Would you make this bet against a stronger player? What hands do you expect kolokos to bet the turn with and then check/fold the river?

I’m a year late to the party but also curious on the last hand. You mention at the beginning that the only better hand we are folding out is QJ, so by the river isn’t there a decent case for checking back, or are we dead set on he has a pocket pair or a 9 at this point and need to get him to fold?
