TightlyWound
So in the middle of a downswing (11 consecutive losing cash game sessions) and questioning everything now. Playing 1/2 I make a small raise to $5 w/66 from ep. Flop 579three callers. Obviously a dynamic board but I have a couple of blockers. Wondering if a bet is better here than a check call. I assume folding to a moderate sized bet is a poor choice but I am not sure. Outside of an 8 not many good cards are coming. Case in point, the turn was a 6 and I ended up losing the hand when I was unable to boat up after calling a turn bet.

Fair chance this should be either limp or fold pre. I think you’re right that check-calling is a generally poor option, though factors like stack size, positions of other players, exact action after you check could all determine the best play. I think it’s telling that you haven’t mention check-raise as a possibility, though.

Fair point regarding consideration of a check raise. I think there are a decent number of hands in my range that would absolutely check raise here. The fact that you pointed it out and I didn’t even consider it initially scares me a bit. A month ago when I was on a heater I am almost certain this would have been one of my favorite options. Taking such a tentative approach could be contributing to this recent downswing.
