This is such a timely video for me. Was playing 1/2 home game last night. Two very good players, one decent players, and 4 very weak player. Took a very unconventional line. Called 7 from bb with A8ss. Two other callers, flop all spades. Sb bets 12, I flat, HJ (very bad player that plays face up) calls. Turn brick, I check he bets 60, I flat knowing he too has a flush (he never bets or raises light). River brick I decide to check thinking I am being “deceptive” and he checks behind with Q2ss. I spent an hour last night getting berated by my friends who are the good players for not getting it in before the river, if not on the river.

Sorry he raised the flop to $40.

Glad it was helpful! To be fair, his river check is terrible, but there are rivers where he might be correct to check (a fourth spade or a board-pairing card, for instance). So yeah, I do agree with getting it in before the river, especially once you’re sure he has a strong hand.
