First off, great start to a series…. But I have a question that I have run across many times in live events and i am never exaxtly sure how to proceed. As we all know live players are much more likely to simply call raises in the early stages. It is the rare live player that will call a raise, then then fold to a standard size 3 bet.
So. ..hypothetically we are early stages of a live event that has a relatively fast structure. Starting stacks 8,000 and blinds are at 50/100… Middle position raises to 300. Button calls, and small blind calls (common situation live).
Gets to us in the big blind and we have AK off. . .if I raise this up to a standard raise off 750ish… It is very likely live that I will get at least two callers…. (Raise to a larger amount around pot size of 1000 I still think it is likely to get 1 caller.)
So know we have a pot ( assuming original 3x size) of approximately 2800 with us out of position.
If we miss our flop it is going to be a health portion of our chip stack to c-bet and we will likely be pot committed.
Are we better off simply calling and then folding if we miss our flop?
Or is it still better to 3 bet and lead out on relatively dry flops.
My experience is we have much less fold equity pre-flop live than we do online andit puts us in tough spots when we raise out of position with hands like Ak and Aq which are likely in the lead given the range of most live callers in this spot but unlikely to be able to induce folds unless we way overbet which of course is Ricky this early. .
In this scenario…. Better to call withAk or to 3 bet?
Hi Cinque, well the third series of my video will be focusing on live/online transition so it would be a good time to answer it then.. in short, yes, 3betting with AK will always be good as we´re getting in more money pre against worse hands.. (with a raise and 2 callers to 300, our squeeze will be nearer 1300-1500)
for me the problem not with the video but with the transition to becoming a better player is the advice on 3betting from the blinds with ace 9/kingjack suited as they figure to be better then the button hands.
the problem for me is hitting my ace with the nine kicker and stacking off and running into an with better kicker.. or do it with king jack suited and run into a king with better kicker.
the second thing is 3betting with 66s in early stages inorder to set up better implied odds. as we are reducing the stack to pot ratio a bit.. are we are not reducing our implied odds especially with the likelihood of hitting a set is 13 to one or something like that ?.
I guess the question is the 3bet is over a limp with sixes and not over an open raise utg right ?
Masterholmes…with regard to your first point i suppose the answer is”yes that can be a problem” lol. Think Ben simply saying 3 betting button with those type of hand from blinds should result in winning play long term.
You recommend 3betting hands like KJo and A9 from blinds vs likely late pos steals. This can leave us in bad spot if they flat and then play in position vs our marginal hand. Do you have a number of BB’s you like to have when doing this?
W1spher answered the question well.. if you re not confident playing deepstacked poker pre flop.. then you must really work on that.. the second series focuses on post flop so i´ll be able to give some examples of how to play different flops/players when we do 3bet pre
It can give us some tricky decisions post flop.. but it allows us to take control of the pot and be able to decide how much we want to inflate it. With a deepstack decisions can be more complex but we have much more room to 3 barrell comfortably should we choose to
I am torn on the aj/aq facing a mid position raise. I am always raising AQ here with the intention of having to make a disciplined fold when facing heavy aggression on a axx,qxx etc flop. I recognize the possibility of playing the hand oop, but if you’re confident post flop, you should be able to deal with this.
If the stacks were shorter(with AQ) I would be enticed to flat the initial raiser with the hope of opening up one of the remaining players ranges who normally would have been folding to my 3 bet(aj 10 etc) and getting ready to party.
I am enjoying this series so far. I just have a question that may be pretty basic but something I perhaps have overlooked.
Near the end of the video you mention some weak players still 3 bet for information. I think I sometimes I do this, ie. I think my hand is ahead of the opponent’s opening range so I 3 bet for value, but when s/he 4 bet shoves I re-evalute and decide they must be at the top of their range and ahead of my hand and therefore I fold.
Can I assume then that this logic is flawed? Can you expand on this or recommend any videos/articles that do?
Ben,
This is a fantastic series. Since black Friday, I only play live tournaments. Usually I play 1 or 2 times per week where the buy-ins are $120 to $300. I’ve had moderate success but in the the last year I felt that I was missing some opportunities, but I couldn’t identify the opportunities.
This video series was exactly what I needed. In the 3rd tournament I played using your guidance I cashed 3rd for nearly $2k. In the tourneys where I didn’t cash, the techniques worked well.
Keep up making videos!

Great start to the series. Would have loved to see some hand examples straight away, especially wrt 3b hands like QJs, A9s and KJs as discussed.
