Hi,
I saw Andrew’s Range Construction videos a while back and they were the nuts! It was like walking into poker heaven 😀 However, I had a difficult time following some of the combination discussions as I was new to the concept. I wanted to start constructing my ranges and having a more structured strategy and I was wondering if there are similar videos on TPE? If not, are there any in depth videos on combinations that I can watch before watching Andrew’s videos again? Thanks for you feedback!

Thanks for the kind words, I’m glad you liked the videos! If you’re interested in this subject, I’d suggest reading (in this order):
Ed Miller’s Poker’s 1%
Matthew Janda’s Applications of NLHE
Will Tipton’s Expert Heads Up NLHE (don’t be fooled by the title, it’s plenty useful outside of heads up play)

I don’t wish to put you off in your search…but let me just say this…
I do not think I am stupid. Well, that is not entirely accurate. In some aspects of my life I have proven myself to be extremely dense. But not academically.
I have been studying game theory in poker solidly for…hmmm…four years or so, part time admittedly. But it has been of serious interest to me in these four years. And I still know very little. In fact, I have only recently come to believe I even understand the basic principles, thanks in large part to Andrew and Matt here at TPE. We have had some fun together at TPE around game theory. I was studying Tipton without even comprehending the basics of game theory.
In order to master the thing, you will probably first off need to master all your Nash push/ shove spots. This in itself will take an aeon. I have been using HRC like a demon for a couple of years, and I am still surprised by ranges often. In fact, I’m surprised at how often I am still surprised. There is a cathedral of unintuitive information in these calculators. After you have mastered pre-flop Nash (good luck with that), you can spend probably the rest of your life studying post flop balance, and still find yourself, at 88 years of age, with more distance to go than you have already covered.
The most sophisticated computers in existence cannot solve multi way post flop hold’em.
And this is why NLHE, as far as I am concerned, has a limitless shelf life, particularly tournaments.
Thank your lucky stars you have some great minds here at TPE to help you begin your quest.

I’ve read Applications of NLHE cover to cover at least three times, and individual sections of it many more times than that. Every single time that I open this book, I rediscover parts of a complete strategy that have disappeared from my day to day poker thought process. I can’t pretend to understand everything well. It makes sense while I’m reading it, but I still have trouble applying some concepts when analyzing hands.
In short, it is awesome. Not meant for beginners, but it will definitely give you the building blocks for combinatorics and detailed range construction/analysis, as well as many other concepts. I think that any serious student of the game is doing themselves a great disservice by not reading this book.
Thanks for pointing out this video series, it just sky-rocketed to the top of my ‘must watch’ list.

Frankly my Range Construction series is one of my more dated. I try hard to create “timeless” material for TPE, but in the case of this series I, and the poker community in general, just knows a lot more about game theory than we did when these videos were created. As you may know, Matt Janda recently published “NLHE for Advanced Players”, which is in many ways a sequel or even revision/correction to “Applications”. Much of what he identifies as things he’d like to change about his original book apply to this series as well. So really, it’s “NLHE for Advanced Players” that should be at the top of your study list. In terms of my videos, my recent series where I delve into key hands from the WSOP, often using tools like CREV, better reflects my current understanding of key game theory concepts than does the Range Construction series.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I read Ed Miller’s book and the discussion on frequencies was eye opening. I found Applications a bit dense but I am working through it. I am also reading the heads up book by Tipton. Should I stop reading applications and get NLHE for Advanced players instead?

When was that series posted on TPE? I am currently reviewing all of Andrew’s videos, starting with his first one from years ago and moving on from there. I was talking to a couple of friends yesterday about 4 bet bluffing ranges and what mine should look like. I know that I am not balanced with my 4 bets and I am trying to work on it. I always tell them what a great instructor Andrew is but my one concern was that I haven’t found any videos regarding range construction. This series seems to be exactly what I am looking for.

hey TW…
it was about a year ago IIRC. It was an excellent series…even an excellent simple listen (I listened a lot to Andrew at work until I got Brokos burnout! This is possible if you listen to anybody 5 hours a day for months, it’s nothing against Andrew personally).
I will say it is one of his more challenging series to wrap one’s head around…and I found after I listened to it I forgot its vital messages anyway; it is a very interesting study of game theory, but I doubt it has the power to revolutionize your game immediately, unlike, for instance Andrew’s Hand Reading series did for me.
Not unless you devote a year to absorbing it all…over and over and over again.
Possibly though…I am just dense!

And yes…I expect this is exactly what you are looking for!

I will definitely do that Andrew. Also, thanks for all of the content you provide on TPE. I have been on here for about a year and never miss any of your videos. I am going deep into the archives at this point and learning something every time I watch one of your videos.
