Hey guys,
I have just written a blog about my experiences with TPE, both good and what can be improved. I thought I would share some of it here too, to see whether anyone else has any thoughts.
Besides the 888pl forums or twoplustwo, I hadn't had any formal training in poker, and I felt like that was going to be the way I took my game to the next level. Anyway, at the time I was listening to the two plus two pokercast, and a few of their ads were for training sites, but the one that really stuck out for me was Tournament Poker Edge, because it dealt exclusively with tournament poker. So in terms of training sites it was a niche but still massive market. I decided to join TPE for a month initially, just to see what it was like, and I was instantly hooked. I was thirsting for poker knowledge at a time when most of my other poker friends' interest was waning, so TPE filled that void perfectly for me.
I was also taken aback by the extremely welcoming environment over there – I was obviously still a huge fish, but the first time a pro player commented on one of my posts and said it was good, it felt great and made me want to interact with the community even more. It is still by far the friendliest forum I have ever been on, and as a significant member of the community I try really hard to continue to keep that going.
Because I am a forum whore, I was asked to be a moderator over there, and eventually started writing the “what's new” article, which was awesome because it allowed me to watch all of the videos, and also get paid a small amount for doing so! It also meant I was actively watching the videos, and that active engagement meant I got the most out of the videos. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, and it was. Unfortunately my Uni studies and other things meant I couldn't keep up doing it.
Now a word on the content – awesome! There is a mix of quality video coaches, and the content is is nicely varied between theory, live sweats and other types of videos. My favourite videos are the theory vids, particularly from Andrew Brokos, Daryl Jace, and Ben Warrington, but to be honest there was probably one video out of the hundreds that I watched that I didn't take something out of.
This may sound like an advertisement, so in the interests of balance I will say that there are some things that TPE could definitely do better. I think the first is that they seem to be in a habit of still trying to hire coaches from the US, and as such we get a lot of content from the US facing sites, which a lot of the time is not especially relevant to playing on pokerstars. A couple of the site's pros were/are also sponsored players of Lock Poker, and for those that follow online poker at all will know that they are just the latest in a string of shady sites that have not paid back players. These pros, particularly Casey “bigdogpkt5s” Jarzabek and Marc Alioto, have been unacceptably quiet on this fact, and I think in the process have hurt their reputation somewhat. Both of them still list on their twitter profiles that they are sponsored lock pros, and to be honest I think that is a significant indictment on both of them, and I wonder why they haven't been instructed to take it down by TPE, as i'm sure it hurts their reputation as well. I would love them to make some sort of comment on this, but I doubt it would happen.
Their podcasts of late have also been a little hit and miss. The early podcasts were absolute gold, and I'm sure they were a massive driver for new subscriptions. In the last year or so the frequency has dropped off significantly though, and most of the podcasts have featured some combination of Bigdog and Marc Alioto. Now don't get me wrong, both of these guys are awesome podcast guests, but of the pros listed on their site, I think Bigdog, Marc Alioto, DannyN13, Cougars4444 and Ttwist are the only ones that have featured more than once. They also have numerous active pros such as Andrew Brokos, Daryl Jace, Cody Custer, Jamie Kerstetter, Jeff Romano, Chris Moon, James Lambert, Arvydas Merfeldas, Cory Waaland and Ben Warrington who have either never been on the podcast, or have been on once, and that was more than 1 year ago. There has also only been two podcasts in the past 6 months, which to me is not good enough to be honest.
To me, this represents another pretty significant failing on the part of TPE, as this was one of their biggest selling points and now seems to have dropped.
Now before you think this is a hate post, it is quite the opposite. I am writing this because I love the TPE community, and as someone who has spent so much time here I feel like I also have a role to play in keeping the TPE community alive and thriving.
Overall, despite the fact that there is some significant areas on which they can improve, you really cant go past the quality of the site if you want to learn tournament poker. It is easily the best value for money I have ever spent in my poker career and in my life really, and if you are coming up from the micros or low stakes, it is essential to have a membership in my opinion.

I get my MTT content from ROI these days. Betyoudontbet and Clutch heros videos pay for the membership initself and thats only the tip of iceberg of what it has to offer. TPE has potential but over the last year it has just gone downhill. It does not mean things cant be changed though because the site does has potential to thrive.
Benny, I have valued your opinion since the 1st time i started reading your posts and i want to say i appreciate you writing such a detailed piece. I have thought hard about everything that you said and will do what ever i can to get TPE back to where it was and of course where it can and should be. What has made TPE what it is today is the subscribers themselves, with all the comments and posts helping us shape and brand the company so for that i want to say thankyou to the community. To think we may be shying away from what got us where we are today does not thrill me and i will be bringing these thoughts both good and not so good to the TPE ownership group and management team. The Goal will be to deliver the best TPE experience to all the exhisting members and to give to the new members the same experience that you had when you joined the nation.

well to be brutally honest, ROI has been part of the reason why I have written this, because I am hearing about them in the same way that TPE used to be talked about. I havent got a membership over there, but I have been pretty tempted recently.

this is why i decided to write something, because i knew you guys wouldn't mind hearing constructive criticism, another thing that i love about TPE.
As a long time member, your input is SO appreciated. We constantly try to be the best at what we do, but of course what you want to do is always easier to visualize that what you can actually put in to action. I think that TPEU is a good start, but we have so many areas that we can improve in, and you've identified some of them here.
With growth comes growing pains. And we have certainly experienced them! When we had 50, 100 and 200 members it was pretty easy to react to every single idea and piece of feedback. I think you will see some improvement in some of these areas. We have a ton of cool things in the works, including a brand new podcast that I think people will be pretty stoked about. New pros. New content ideas.
We might not always hit a home run, but it won't be for lack of swinging the bat!

as i said, its not that the podcast was bad in the slightest, but just that i think it needed a refresh, and it looks like you guys already had been thinking along those lines too

really good things on TPE: Brokos, DannyN13, Dary Jace content and some very good other vids gringer…
some bads things:
– don't listen to members, it's been now one year within TPE, and it is the major leak I pointed out. post I did not get answers from staff, it's now better but answers are usually we're doing our best to satisfy all people or it is coming up, but in fact nothing special last 6 months. except TPEU which I consider like a table of content of the site nothing more special (it seems rough but just my thought)
to be honest I tried a lot of site and TPE was still the best for what I was looking for until I discover RIO which is now the best fit for what I'm looking for. I still stay within TPE but it has to change especially on video content. the infinite x part videos review series doesn't help the dynamic of site especially when the content is very light regarding deep discussion vs the lenght of the serie. short stuff and deep stuff would be far more efficient (Brokos is a benchmark for that here).
I hope you realize it also, because when you look at the comment in videos, the number drastically went down past month. for me it means that people are not interested in the content.
I stay here and still give a chance, still waiting for” the ton of cool stuff” killingbird speaks about for last 6 months.
go TPE! 🙂

As a very casual user of the site – more related to hopefully temporary boredom with poker than tpe – I wanted to make a couple of comments. In general, I really like the site and think it is good value for the money. Perhaps some members – not just on this thread – forget how much they pay when they make negative comments (criticism is fine, but what is realistic)… also a strength of the TPE community is that people can and do feel it is their community, and hence feel free to offer critical comments (they want their community to get better and better).
I've been a member for less than a year – and thanks to the Thinking Poker podcast sponsorship! – and in that time quite a few new pros have been added who have been good for the site, Ginger's articles are great, and it is good to see pros commenting in the forums more (Cody Custer, Ginger45, Foucault).
- This latter thing I would like to see more of. More pros reopening old threads, adding comments, asking questions, making us think… this happens, but more of it would be great.
- If I can be greedy, more podcasts would be very welcome (we've been starved lately!) You guys are good at them.

I should mention, the existing TPE strategy podcast will not go away, this will just be another one in our “network” of shows if you will.

ROI is either $120/yr or $1200/yr, which are at either end of the spectrum. I do agree that TPE has to continually innovate to stay ahead of what is offered for $120/yr. Especially because ROI has gone the “quantity” route (hammering out daily videos).
The harder part to judge is what works for you over time. But I do hope that the team here in encouraged to create some content offerings that are unique to help differentiate them.
The MTT strategy stuff is pretty good here, especially the theory videos. But there are many other things that could be done (such as Audio offerings for those who listen in cars, or a weekly online meet-up game where a PRO is commenting on how hands are played, etc). I think the best thing right now is to encourage them to do that (which we are) and point out how we are viewing them vs. ROI (which we are also constructively doing). The rest is “time will tell”.
Perhaps more suggestions in the suggestions forum (that we less specific to “we want video X”) would help quantify for the TPE staff would would be unique and innovative?
