Even more proof that the DOJ can't keep us down, we are pleased to announce that Nikolai “Halowax” Sears has joined TPE as a new pro. Niko as we like to call him is a HSMTT regular (formerly known as Euthanaces on FTP and YaGotBurnt on PS). He specializes in NLHE and PLO and his first video for TPE is a Intro to PLO MTTs for tournament players. That series goes live today.
Niko has several large scores and prestigous wins under his belt including a 2nd in Double Deuce, a Brawl chop, three 100r Victories, 3rd in FTP Million and most recently, a win in PS the $500 PLO Monday major.
Several of us at TPE have known Niko for a long time and he is without a doubt one of the most creative and analytical minds in poker today. I learn a lot about poker everytime I speak to him, and I am sure you will too. Enjoy his first video!
Welcome Mr. Halowax,
hope the Plo Tourney Vid follow a few more, it is one of my fav cash games, despite its high variance.
The tourneys are in ss are supersoft a welcome change in the mass of NLHE tournaments.
Does your nick base on the fav TV Series Lost. If yes nice choice.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! Really glad to be joining the TPE family, and I hope you will enjoy the content I'll be putting out there for you. It's great to be working here with these fantastic friends of mine, and I look forward to getting to know many of you and help you grow as players.
I highly reccomend all tourney players play more plo, because it is +FUN, and because there is tons of value to be had in MTTs at all stakes… and what better way to make sure you are a winner at the game then going through the theory series I've put together for you!??

Yes, sir! I actually picked the name as my global poker alias after the video for “The Orchid” aired at Comicon preceding Season 4, in which Dr. Chang used it as an alias, but the spelling had not yet been shown on screen (Edgar Halliwax). Though it was inspired by that clip, I actually pronounce it phoenitcally, like the ring of an Angel… but one that could be melted with heat… or something… Really, I just failed at spelling.l
I have a general ? for Niko. I play live cash at a place close to home, and on occasion we get a 1-2 or 2-5 round by round game going. From my experience most of the players are pretty bad at PLO. Is there any general advice you'd give someone playing in a cash game like this? Maybe just some general “dos” and “donts”. Thanks, and welcome, really seems like you put A LOT of time into this 1st vid series running. Just this series alone should pay for months of membership on TPE!!
EDIT: maybe I shoulda put this in live/cash section, feel free to move it guys, srry.

I was praying he'd be one of your additions!
Sick, sick poker mind.
I've had the pleasure of meeting him, he's a genuine, very likeable person as well.

What kind of bad are we tlaking about? If it is anything like the game I used to play in, most players play something like 72/1 with a <1 AF… so super loose passive. Usually we would have 7-8 players to a flop in a limped pot and whoever made the nuts would end up scooping a decent sized pot against players who put in way too much money with weak made hands and dominated draws. It's funny, the players in our game would get really annoyed that I actually raised pre flop, as they almost never would, unless they have Aces ofc!
In games like this, you should be open limping in ep and likely mp as well with hands that can make the nuts. You can pop it up in LP to push pf equity edges in position as well as isolate weaker players with hands that can get you in trouble in seven handed pots but have smooth flop equity distribution (part 3 of the series will discuss this), but building a pot from up front wouldn't be very sage of you. It's extremely important to be aware of the nuts, and how people play it in plo (which I will be addressing in the next part of the series), but especially so in these loose passive games with so many players to a flop. A nut peddling strategy will be very, very profitable. As you get more comfortable, and more familiar with your villains, opening up your value range is essential to maximizing your profitability, but if you aren't super confident, then just playing the nuts (or relative nuts) and nut draws aggresively and always potting it should work just fine. If there are one or two competent players then you can try working in some bluffs against them (especialyl if they are also playing nut peddling strategies!), but it is likely going to be not so wise to bluff the stations.
Smart seat selection will have a dramatic effect on your hourly, so if you guys do not draw for seats, do whatever you can to get position on the biggest marks. The host of the game we used to play was so terrible at plo, and ended up losing over 70k one year playing two nights a week (One 5/10 and one 5/5). We would draw for seats, and if you were on his left, you had to take some brutal beats to have a losing session.

THANKS Halowax!!!!! really appreciate it. You sir, are the nuts!!
Your welcome, sir. It's my pleasure to help, and I appreciate the compliment.
I guess, this is a pretty good time to say that I am looking to take on some students for MTT coaching, now that my schedule is so wide open due to the indictments. If anyone is interested, please feel free to shoot me a pm.
