I didn’t know where else on the TPE forums this should go, so because I see it I am posting on Stars.

I was playing a $3.50 hyper with 9 players and as has become normal for me, I either search for other players just in Stars or look them up on Sharkscope to get a feel for how many tables they’re playing, how long they have been playing etc.

At my Hyper was this guy who has played almost 350,000 SNGs or tournaments and in profit for more than $367,000. He appears to be playing 20+ tables at a time and going for serious volume, but why would someone like this be playing such small stakes, with buy-ins ranging from $2.50 to $15 in 9 man hypers and 180 man turbos?

Wouldn’t such a strong winning player have moved up by now, rather than be another reg in these very reg infested low stakes SNGs? What can you guys infer from this Sharkscope info?

Short answer – because making $350k in 350k games is $1/game, and anyone making $1/game isn’t particularly good at poker. They’re mass-tabling and scraping together a small winrate because that’s the most +EV thing for them, if they can’t beat higher games.

Longer answer – could be a few reasons why a decent player would play lower. Downswings, confidence issues, tilt-induced bankroll problems, Twitch streaming, coaching, or multiple other factors. Shouldn’t really matter in terms of how you play against them, though. You have a read that they’re experienced, you have HUD stats, you’ve seen them play – you know what you need to know. I think your time is best spent thinking about other things, since you’ll never really get an accurate answer to your question.
