Hey Guys,

I Have been studying/playing poker since about June 2015 and have tried a few different formats (Cash,SNG,Spins,MTT)

But I now want to stick to the one format and grind from there.

The plan is to play MTTSNG (45man 180man) on Stars

I’m going use this space to keep myself motivated and on track with my MTTSNG grind.

Starting Bankroll: $242

Plan:

1) Play $1.50 45man

2) At $350 Bankroll add $3.50 45 man

3) At $500 Bankroll add $2.50 180man

4)…

Volume:

For the first couple of months I will be aiming for 300 games a month and go from there

At the moment 4-6 tables is about my limit, which is something I hope I can improve as the challenge goes on

I have played the 45s on and off over the last couple of months and here is the graph so far:

Image Enlarger

Played: 274

Net Winnings: $107.95

ROI: 26.3%

Only small sample size and Ive already gone through bit of run good and then a 50 game down swing

So I know need to be careful with my BR management in these games

I plan to update this thread once every week or two and maybe post up some hands and ICM spots (which I need to work on a lot)

Cheers

RB

Hello RiskyBull,

fwiw I have been working these 180 mans for 5 years. A few thoughts on your post.

First off, the good news: that ROI is very impressive. A solid winning 180 man grinder would be more than happy with that figure. It certainly is better than mine… I struggle to maintain 10%, although I do play the $8 and $15 games. I am thus far a lifetime net loser in poker, as my passion is MTTs. If an upward sloping graph was my goal I could take one…but MTTs are where my heart lies.

As you already mentioned you can guess the bad news: your sample size is minuscule. New players (myself included back in the day) often ask “how many hands do I need to play before I know whether I am a winning or losing player?”. The question is meaningless in practical terms, as the by the time you might reach the relevant number your game will have developed to the point where you’d need to ask the same question all over again. In practical terms, however, personally I would think that by the time one reaches 1 million hands one should have a pretty good idea whether poker will be a winning proposition long term.

Your BR proposition looks sound to me. 200 buy ins for 180 man sngs is sensible for a winning player, maybe even a touch conservative. 100 buy in downswings are a regular occurrence.

I GRIND THIS is a respected TPE pro in these games, and he runs a series on the 180 mans. Its on my “to do” list to watch his videos, but thus far I am watching Brokos’s range construction series. I literally need to watch those vids 7-8 times each to get a handle on them.

Best of luck in the 180’s. If I can help I will try, but if you carry on like that I shall be coming to you for advice!

Sorry I see your graph is from the 45 mans. Nevertheless I expect thats still a phenomenal ROI.

Just a thought re: multi-tabling. Stars has indicated major changes are coming re:3rd party software. It is expected HUDs may become prohibited. This will drastically affect these 180 man sngs imo. In fact I would not be surprised if these games died off altogether. These are high volume games favoured by regs. If the regs can no longer maintain volume, they will move elsewhere, or leave altogether.

Just a thought. Maybe you don’t even use a HUD.

Thanks for the reply RiceMan.

Yes I defiantly understand that I need many more games to get a truer ROI figure

IGT series was great even for the 45mans as they play the same in the early -mid stages

I do use a hud, so if Pokerstars decide to make the change, it will defiantly make it tougher as I start adding more tables

Are you sticking to turbos? On PS I can get in the $2.50 180 or $3.50 27/45 pretty quickly but the “normal” speed < $3.50 tournaments almost never seem to fill up aside from the 9/18 seat. I feel like I experience less variance at the normal speed tournaments. I don’t mind Turbos for 1-3 tables, but any larger and the variance feels greater.

Counter to this though, the $5.00 90 Progressive Knockout has been my most successful 90+ SnG tournament, which is a Turbo (only the SnG. The regular MTTs are actually normal speed and the Bounty Builder version starts out at 8min levels and slows to 12min and then 15min at some point.) I like taking shots with Prog KOs because bounties help with the variance. Even a min cache with a couple bounties can be worth 3 or 4 buy-ins. Bounty Builder MTTs are huge though, much like “The Big” tournaments. Still, it isn’t too hard to score a few bounties, get in to the cache and free-roll from there. There are definitely some gamblers and bounty-seekers in these though so trying to make someone fold by risking their stack isn’t as effective and I’ve gotten myself in to trouble getting tricky early on. I find when deep they start to play more normal and there is some interesting meta-game edge to be found by seeking the seekers….off topic through.

Thanks for the post! Your goals are close to mine.

Cheers,

Yeh just turbos MovieFX, as their are more games running and I can get more volume in

The variance is defiantly bigger in the turbos and you ROI will be lower compared to normal speed but your hourly should be higher

So far this month I have struggled with RL commitments, so volume isn’t where I would like to be

I think I’m playing a little tight when we get down to the final 2 tables which is something I picked up on in a few reviews

Mid-Feb Report

Games Played: 114

Winnings: $29.41

ROI%: 17.2

ITM%: 19.3

Hoping to still hit my volume goal of 300 this month

ROI%: 24.2

Hey man, good luck with the games! I believe I just busted you in a game (you were really short and shoved K4, I had to call with 99). For this I am truly sorry :).

Well its been 3 months since I last posted but things have been going quite well

The main point of this thread was to motivate me to play more, which it has

I’m currently playing mainly MTTs now with the occasional MTTSNG to fill table space

I currently play about 15-20hrs a week and study and/or watch videos for 10 hours a week

I may come back to the MTTSNG grind at some stage but for now just some normal MTTs
