Every year I make it out to the WSOP.  Last year I played in 6 mtts, and cashed in two.  I also I played in my first bracelet event last year smile  I played the one drop $1111 buy in, and cashed for $2054 landing 378/4700.  Then the next day I played the daily deepstack event that they have and cashed $1900 getting 15/1400, just missing the final table.  I realize now, looking back, that risking $1111, 20% of my bankroll, probably wasn't the best money management LOL.  Live and learn, but it was a great experience that gives me motivation to return to the bracelet events in the future!

This year, I'm going to be a little more bankroll conscious.  I am going to play in only the daily deepstack events, and possibly some Venetian events that I have heard so much about on the podcasts.  I will take $2000, and at $235 an entry, I will be able to enter 8 deepstack events.  I am going to be out there for 2 solid weeks, giving myself plenty of time to rest inbetween tournaments.

I decided after the last WSOP that I should get back into playing online to build up my mtt skills, so I started grinding on Bovada.  My goals for 2014 online grinding are:

– Play strictly NLHE mtts (specialize so my decisions are automatic).

– Play at least 60 hours per month.

– Study at least 10 hours per month.

– Only risk 1% of my bankroll per mtt.

– Be completely focused and present while I am playing (no TV, alcohol, phone, music – no distractions).

– Form or join a study group with other players who also play mtts.

– Hire a coach who specializes in the mtts I want to crush.

– Focus on metrics that will yield me the highest dollar per hour win rate (fewer tables, more tables, best time of day to play, etc.)

– Keep accurate records of my play.

– Keep a poker journal and write in it after each session.

I am really happy with my progress so far.  In both January and February, for the most part, I have exceeded my goals.  I have yet to hire a coach, but I believe that I will find one soon.  One thing that I know has helped my game a lot is forming a study group.  There are 4 of us that get together on Skype anytime we grind, and as we are playing we can discuss hands that come up.  Everyone brings something to the table, and we all support one another.  If one of us makes the final table, the others will watch and rail him.  It's good to have guys in your corner supporting you.

That's it for now, I will post my results for each month.  If anyone has any comments on your goals or if you have ideas on other important metrics to keep track of, I would love to hear them.

Take care and good luck at the tables laugh

January results:

36 mtts

9 cashes: 8/297, 10/345, 115/1408, 8/195, 16/302, 10/204, 30/303, 13/196, 15/162

2 final tables: 8/297, 8/195

65.4 hours played

9.0 hours studying

3653 hands played

profit = -$109.53

$ per hour = -$1.67

I bubbled the final table twice finishing 10th which was a little frustrating this month, with a couple other close finishes; 13th, 15th, and 16th.

Almost all of my cashes were super stack events, deepstacks, or R+A events.  I like the rebuys a lot because you can get a big stack after the first hour.  And if you play a $3.30R or a $5.50R, you can get the double rebuy then the add on and really only be playing a $9.30 or $15.50 mtt, with a 10,000 chip stack or greater after the the first hour.

A little frustrating that I was not in the green for the month, but I attributed that to coming up short on the final tables (the top 3 finishes is where the $$$ is at).  So I decided for the month of February I was going to start studying bubble play and final table play.  In addition I would put in more volume.

February results:

61 mtts

13 cashes: 22/286, 1/51, 1/29, 1/47, 14/215, 4/30, 17/300, 29/278, 3/194, 20/902, 4/162, 30/282, 6/55

7 final tables: 1/51, 1/29, 1/47, 4/30, 3/194, 4/162, 6/55

3 wins laugh

69.9 hours played

9.5 hours studying

4471 hands played

profit = $344.13

$ per hour = $4.92

I feel like studying bubble play and watching final table videos really paid off this month.  I cranked out 3 wins, and made some deeper runs.  Having a study group this month has paid off huge.  We support each other, and talk over hands and hh.  It was a good month!

Goals for March:

I'm going to play in any Contender events that I can play in.  I'm also going to grind at least 60 hours this month, and study at least 10 hours.

In preparation for the WSOP I am going to start playing some 27 and 36 man SNGs.  I want to get more experience with push/fold ranges, and I will be watching videos on that topic.  If I make a deep run at one of the Venetian or WSOP deepstack events, I want to be solid in my ranges.  This month is about my deep run play, and grinding out maximum profits and ICM at final tables.  I'm looking forward to it!

good call on those 27 man games dude. they're likely really decent bankroll builders. next session i put in, i think i'm gonna just run those and the 6max don's to get in some low variance volume. hows the last week been?

Hey guys!  Sorry I missed your posts on here.  I'm really glad you joined us Doug, it's good to have you on Skype with us talking over hands!

March was a really good month.  I played some of the 27 man SNGs like I planned, and printed out a push/fold chart to help me with my ranges.  I played some live tournaments which I haven't done since Christmas and it felt really good.  I shipped a live event while I was visiting my parents up in Idaho.

March results:

52 mtts

10 cashes:  3/27, 1/27, 1/9, 1/27, 37/1055, 1/47, 12/459, 19/239, 1/55, 20/286

5 final tables:  3/27, 1/27, 1/27, 1/47, 1/55

4 wins laugh

69.5 hours played

12.1 hours studying

4014 hands played

profit = $1,492.17

$ per hour = $21.47

$ per hand = $0.37

Bankroll = $2000 on Bovada, $3500 in poker account; $5500 total.

Goals for April:

Again I'm going to play at least 60 hours this month, and study at least 10 hours.  I'm also going to buy HM2 and get the Bovada HH Converter for it.  I really need to review my play more often, because I know this is how you get much better.  I hear all the pros talking about it, so that's what I am going to do.  I will buy the program and spend at least 5 hours reviewing HH.

I am going to continue to make great decisions at the tables, play undistracted and sober, and above all – have fun laugh  Thank you for the support guys!

Ok, I had a good month for April.  Didn't play as much as I would have liked, but I learned a lot. I decided to get more prepared for the WSOP I wanted to turn my focus to HU play the last half of the month.  I couldn't put in near the volume.  I would get really tired of playing after just a couple hours.  But I did learn a lot.  I feel much more comfortable now playing B vs B in an mtt.  I was uncomfortable playing that before and now I feel at ease.

26 mtts

3 cashes:  9/48, 23/1354, 13/273

1 final table:  9/48

0 wins frown

43.5 hours played

15 hours studying

2859 hands played (1874 mtt, 985 hu)

profit = -$257.13

$ per hour = -$5.91

$ per hand = -$.08

Bankroll = $1700 on Bovada, $3500 in poker account; $5200 total.

Hope everyone is doing well!  As for my next session, I think it will be at the WSOP!  I am leaving for Colombia tomorrow.  I will spend 10 days with my fiancee down there, and then I will come back for a couple days then head out on a road trip with my buddy.  After that, I will drop him off in Arizona and I will head to Vegas for the WSOP!  I will be there from May 26th – June 10th if anyone else wants to meet up.  1(805) 217-3674

Have a great May everyone, and keep grinding and learning laugh

Well the last month and a half have been awesome!  I took the last week of April and the first 2 weeks in May off from poker … didn't even pick up a poker book.  Then I headed out on a poker trip for one month, I just got back.  I started in Palm Springs, played a couple of tournaments w/ a lot of older players.  That was good.  3/47, then 1/6 for the two tourneys I played.  I remember the first hand I played at the second tourney – I raised from UTG and it folded to the BB who folded and said, “Not with that ace!”  That's when I realized I couldn't remember what I had, so I peaked at my cards before I tossed them in and scooped the pot to see, “Tspade7club“.  The regulars at the Agua Caliente Resort and Casino were not much competition.  laugh

I then headed out to Tombstone Arizona, saw the famous gun fight at the OK Corral, Tombstone Cemetary, and it was fun.  Then I went to Meteor Crater and witnessed what a small meteor can do to the earth's surface.  That was impressive!  Lowell Observatory near Flagstaff, the observatory that discovered Pluto and the Expanding Universe.  After that Laughlin where I stayed at the Colorado Belle.  They had the best poker.  And then Vegas for the WSOP smile

When I got to Vegas I stayed at my brother's house.  I met my family there and I played cards.  Lots of cards.  I met up with Jacob (jacobsharktank), that was a blast.  We played in the Orleans $340.00 mtt deepstack.  We both lasted about 8 hours busting one right after the other.  I also met up with the TPE guys.  KB, Bigdog, Mark, Ttwist, Joe, Carlos, Jordan.  It was a lot of fun.

I learned a lot.  I had visions of becoming a live tournament pro.  After talking with a lot of professionals in and out of TPE, they made me realize that I should get good at live cash games.  I'm still going to grind online mtts, but most of my effort is going into live cash (80% cash / 20% mtts).  They described cash games as your steady income … your milk.  Unless you're grinding as much as Bigdog, the varience will kill you with mtts.  Especially live.  I do like the live aspect too.  I like being able to talk to people at the table, get inside their head.  I can read players much better live than I can online.

Well here's my totals for May 18 to June 9.  23 days.

23 mtts (buy ins $40-$340)

7 cashes:  3/47, 1/6, 10/50, 143/1475, 1/47, 4/40, 92/1332

5 final tables: 10/50, 4/40, 3/47, 1/6, 1/47  ( I guess the 1/6 doesn't count, but I put it anyway lol )

2 wins  laugh

70.5 hours played

20 hours studying  (no books but I did spend hours talking hands w/ TPE guys)

1410 hands played (estimated at 20 hands per hour)

profit = $7.00

$ per hour = $0.10

$ per hand = $0.005

I also played some cash games, anything from 1/2 NL, 1/3 NL, and 2/6 Limit.

5 sessions

2 out of 5 were winning

15.8 hours played

395 hands played (estimated at 25 hands per hour)

profit = $396.00

$ per hour = $25.06

$ per hand = $1.00

Total comes out to 86.3 hours, $403.00 profit.  I really had hoped to win more, but it's better than losing.  And more importantly, I learned A LOT.  It was good to meet up with everyone, and I can't wait until next year!

Bankroll = $1700 on Bovada, $3900 in poker account; $5600 total.

Thanks for sharing your story.

One bit of advice.  If you plan to spend 70 hours working on poker, I would recommend at least a 50/20 split of playing and studying.  There's really quite a limit to what you can learn while playing.

Hey Steve, good to hear that you had a good time!!  I very much agree with the above post by mark regarding study time.  This is something I'm trying to get better at.  In the past I have grinded near 100% and not done much studying.  Watching videos on TPE or any other site is NOT going to cut it either in my opinion.  You really need to review hands and maybe do some math work with hand ranges and spots at diffrerent stack sizes.  Good to see you kept such good records of your live trip and being breakeven is way better than losing for sure!  Good luck at the tables man

Thank you guys.  You're right.  I need to put in more time studying and reviewing hh for sure.  Especially now that I have HM2 and the HH converter.  That's one way to get better fast!
