Hey there fellow TPE Members! (Spoiler alert, this is going to be a long one)

I have recently joined TPE in the hopes that I will improve my game and learn as much as possible to give me as big an edge as I can get at the felt. I have gone through Andrew Brokos first series in TPEU and already enjoying the content and how much it has already made me see certain concepts in the game differently.

ABOUT ME

So I’m 23 and I live in Melbourne, Australia. I have a lovely girlfriend of 2 years, who I live with and she has 2 beautiful children that I treat as my own. I work full time in a call center and part time as a Tournament Director at night for extra money as my girlfriend is chasing her dream as a writer, leaving little to no wiggle room financially.

I have been playing a little, on and off, since I was 17 but never put any thought in to becoming a better player until about mid 2016, a few months after I was sent $5 from 888. I started to grind on 888 in heads up matches and full ring cash games and for about 6-8 weeks and I had an extremely hot run of cards, which lead to my bankroll hitting 4K within those 6 weeks. I had no idea about playing stakes based on BR/Skill and at the time I did not understand that I was just running hot and instantly assumed that I was just far better than my opponents. Unfortunately, or fortunately, that didn’t last very long. I had no concept of BR management and started playing 1K heads up matches where I proceeded to lose all of my roll, which crushed my confidence. Fast forward to August 2016 and I just could not get a roll going no matter how many times I deposited and hit the tables, with what I thought was a solid poker skill base. I soon found out about people having coaches and training videos online for general concept learning and soon after that found online websites for training such as TPE and Upswing poker. I found a lot more success after watching training videos on youtube and various other free options but still found that I was still not playing as solidly as I thought. I then decided that enough was enough and finally joined an online training website, TPE! I have found a bit more success since joining the team but I know that I still have a long way to go. I have now been playing MTTs online and  at local pubs, which I also am Tourney Director for, exclusively and have found much more success and find myself consistently in the money!

HOWEVER, Since online poker in Australia seems to be going the way of USA I am going to begin grinding 1/3 cash games in my local casino a lot more and will be tracking every session I have in THIS THREAD, so it would definitely be cool for others on my path to chime in and hopefully some people who have already gone through my current journey to throw some advice in the air!

MY GOALS FOR 2017

My goals are quite straight forward for my poker year in 2017

– Consistently study weekly

– Crush the stakes I am playing at the moment (Beginning at 1/3 cash)

– Build a respectable BR before 2017 ends (15K-25K is my aim)

– Make it to Vegas for WSOP

– Quit smoking (I think this will be a big one for me personally)

THANKS FOR READING AND LOOK FORWARD TO SOME FEEDBACK AND LOGGING MY FIRST SESSION IN ON THURSDAY NIGHT!

Welcome and good luck with your poker journey.

I can definitely help you with one of your goals – quitting smoking! I would make this top of your list as it will help with the other goals. How do I know this? I quit 6 months ago and it has helped a lot with poker, especially online MTT grinding because I dont have to rush around in the 5min break trying to have a smoke, make a drink, have a piss ect ect. Also playing live MTTs when the breaks are every 2hrs or more I’m not getting distracted by wanting to have a smoke. Not to mention freeing up the cash you spend on smoking and the obvious health benefits such as improved concentration, better stamina ect

All you need to stop smoking is the desire to stop and a great book called “The Easy Way – to stop smoking” by Alan Carr. Get an ebook to your phone so you have it with you whenever. Read a bit everyday, whilst continuing to smoke, by the end of the book you will be glad to put out your last cig and get on wit the rest of your life. Successfully stopping smoking with also give you a confidence boost as well.

Thanks Turbulence!
That is definitely some great advice! I have been trying to quit for a while now so will take on any suggestions! Just got the book and will start it now, I’ll keep updates daily on this thread so keep an eye out friends! Definitely keen to kick the ciggies and I really hope this book can help!

The goal of this thread is to stay completely honest as I find it hard to be COMPLETELY honest with myself when it comes to things like this…
WISH ME LUCK!cool

You’ve taken the right first few steps.  Established some goals and set a study plan. The key now is to stick with it. Good luck and let us (TPE and the community) know how we can help!

THANKS KILLINGBIRD! Completely forgot my update last week, so here it is guys

STARTING BANKROLL

$300 – Max buy in for $1/$3 tables at Crown Casino Melbourne, Australia

So I sit down at about 11pm on Good Friday eve after a work party, at which I did not drink any alcohol. First thing I do before heading to the table is have a quick 15 minute meditation session with my headphones in the middle of the casino, weird or not it clears my head, and proceed to take me seat in between a middle aged European gentleman, to my left, with a stack of about $950 and a relatively young Aussie who seems to be a reg with about $600 or so. I start to play relatively tight, 6 handed, until I notice a man on the table is nearing drunk and playing nearly every 2 cards dealt to him. So I decide to play a pot with him.

I am in the cut off and the action folds to the tipsy loose player, about $600 behind him, who opens for $15.
Action folds to me and I look down at AcTc, with $290 effective, and decide to raise it up to $45
BTN and SB fold with BB and tipsy guy calling.

POT $139
Flop comes out Kd2cTs
BB checks and tipsy guy bets $55, I call the bet and BB folds.

POT $259
TURN comes a 7c and tipsy guy bets in to me once again for $55. I think for a minute whether I should Raise or just call and end up making the call, Imagining he will be double barreling a lot of his A high hands, small pockets, decent pairs and worse draws.

POT $369
RIVER comes out Kc
and to my extreme delight tipsy guy shoves all in for about $490-$510. It was a bit strange given the pot size and that he snap shoved almost as soon as the King hit the felt. I didn’t know what to think about it and either way, with the nut flush I’m always calling.
He says he has a king and I flip over the nut flush, he says GH and mucks.

If I could get any feedback on how I played this it would be greatly appreciated as I have never really dont a hand post before and would really like to do more. I would put up more hands but unfortunately my memory is horrible so I only remember the tipsy guy hand haha.

SESSION WRAP UP
So it hits 3am and I hear that the casino will shut for 12 hours due to good Friday so I decide to cash out and head home after a decent session. Overall I was really happy with my first session, regardless of the stack swings, and am very keen to report my next session which shall be played tomorrow after work.

ENDING BANKROLL

$683 – PROFIT $383

All in all a great start to my journey,  IMO

Also haven’t quit smoking yet, but the more I get in to this book, THNX for the suggestion Turbulence, the more I do not wan’t to smoke. I have also been studying at least 60 mins a day, Either cash games strategy from doug polk whilst taking notes, or going through the TPEU courses with a video or 2 a day whilst also taking notes.
WSOP is also looking very doable for a 5-6 day trip!

ARRRRGHHHH!
So I hit my local last night and it didn’t exactly go badly…. HOWEVER I played a sattelite for a local main event with a 500K GTD and stone cold bubbled! It was so crushing, I shoved for 8BB with KsJh 3 handed and got called by Ks5d

I instantly left after feeling an overcoming tilt that I could not ward off, rather then punting my bankroll at the cash tables.

Didn’t get to note many hands but here is one that had me a bit confused early in the sattelite

playing 9 handed with almost everyone sporting a starting stack ($5K) besides myself, I have about 9.5K, and an asian gentleman in his 50s who has self proclaimed the name of Mr.Miyagi, Lol has around 16K
Blind are 100/200 with no antes and I look down at A2ss in the hijack so I raise to 450 and CO and BB (Mr.Miyagi) call.
Flop comes 2hQs6s BB checks and I bet about 700, CO calls and Miyagi folds
Turn is 7d and I bet 1K and CO shove for around 3K extra… I fold

Just wondering if I could have taken a different line???????

Either way I left down about $75 because of the loss in the $90 satty.

On the smoking front, I haven’t really been smoking at all which is cool and I have been going through the training vids more consistently lately.

THANKS TO TPE FOR HELPING ME UP MY GAMEclubdiamondheartspadecool

Good luck Rinnegan – I’ll certainly follow along and root for your success, my fiance is also trying to become a writer and I know how much work that particular dream takes.

As for your most recent hand, with you having bottom pair and the flush draw you could perhaps check call? You certainly have good equity against most hands that you don’t want to get blown off, but a lot of it depends on your read of the player in a live game like this.

If you want to post more hand histories from live games type in the details to your phone after playing major hands so you can post more details (Ie, stack sizes, reads, history) to help us give more accurate advice :).

Thankyou Scotfish.
Oh that’s awesome, hard working people writers are.

Yeah I was beginning to think the same. He was quite a solid reg and all I had seen from him at that point was good decisions followed by even better run good. He was, what seemed to be, a young (25-30) european fellow who was always taking his time to think about his decisions whilst also not tanking like a douche for no reason, to my knowledge.

Yeah I definitely try but I’m not so quick at it so i miss quite a few things or end up taking to long and angering others at the table :/

Will definitely go back to writing notes in my notebook with pre written skeletons for stack size, blinds, positions etc.

Thanks for the tips and sorry for the sloppy hand histories, I’m still incredibly new to sharing hands and even going through my own actions as an assessment.
