I'm about to start a new and interesting job in a week, where I will become a tennis play by play announcer.  I will be traveling throughout the US 12-16 weeks a year, and announcing matches at a professional tournament, and will become an independent contractor.  The money is good enough to essentially pay my bills, but not save anything for my wife and I.  However, this leaves a unique chance for me to become a semi-professional poker player during the 30-40 weeks of the year that I won't be announcing.

I am not at a level where I can do this yet, but I am going to attempt to make between $500-$1000 per month.  I know when I was playing MTTs about 8 days a month at the micro level, I made that in 3 months.  I am now going to have the chance to play 3-4 times a week over that period.

First, my questions for the forum:

1) I'm currently on Carbon, Lock, Bovada, and BCP.  I'm planning on joining ACR as well.  How are the payouts for each of those sites?

2) I'm about to buy a new laptop, both for the tennis job and poker.  Any recs?

Now, my goals for myself, as I'm also a believer in stating goals in a public place:

1) In the weeks that I'm home, play at least three times a week.

2) Keep a proper BRM so that I don't overextend myself.

3) Once a month, travel the 2 hours to a casino to play some live cash.

4) On the road, watch a minimum of one video per week.

5) Read one poker book per month.

6) Run every day I play.

7) Maintain life balance

8) Profit.

9) Play in June 2014 VDSE and 1 WSOP event.

I would also, long term, be really interested in some good coaching.  I don't have the funds yet, but hey, I'll get there.

GL everyone, and GL me.

Update: Ordered the new Sony Vaio Fit, but unfortunately, it doesn't arrive until after I leave for four weeks.  Going to be playing some cash and some MTT turbos while on the road if time permits.

GL, hope you'll enjoy the life of a part time poker pro.. the other job sounds great!

as for studying, I would focus less on reading books and prefer to invest the money in coaching/training sites and watch vids on a tablet/phone rather then reading books, only very few books are good and most of the information is pretty outdated in most books,

GL on your journey

Quick update:

New computer is (almost) fully operational.  PT4 is having some issues, so I have a troubleshooting chat session with them for Wednesday.  But outside of that, I'm ready to go.  I started playing some cash games over the weekend, just to retrain my endurance a little bit.  I think of it often like running.  You can't just go do half marathons.  You have to work your way up to them. I figured I'd play micro cash sessions for a half hour, then an hour…I got up to two today. Today was the first day I felt that I was able to think about things at a slightly higher level again.  So that was a major step.

Also put together a spreadsheet of every (non-hyper turbo, or 11r) tournament of $11 or less on BCP, Bovada, and Carbon on a daily basis, with the <$5 tournaments on Lock, from 8AM-10PM CDT.  I might have missed one or two, but I figured this would give me a good way to look and plan out my days, working within my bankroll.  It also does not account for the Sunday action, but gets M-Sat.  So…I think that was a good place to build from.

I hope that by Wednesday afternoon, I'll be able to give it a go, and play some tournies.  Starting very small this week, and working my way back up for next week.

Thanks for reading.

Well, I finally had a day to play tournaments.  I've had terrible internet service (THANKS COMCAST!), and it cost me at multiple points during the day where I had drop outs, but I think I might have had my best day ever playing tournaments.  I had about 6 hours, so I got in a total of 13 tournaments during that time, ranging from the Fast Fifty, to a $6r on BCP.  Of the 13, I reached 5 final tables.  5.  I was stunned when I went back and thought about that.  That included a win in a fast fifty on Lock, 3rd place efforts in a Bovada $1 and the BCP $6r (for $84), and a runner up finish in the Bovada $4 Beginner, which is seriously the softest tournament out there.

The things I was happy with today: My short stack play.  I made very good all in decisions, and only had 1-2 times when I sucked out.  I have been pretty conscious about that over the last several months.

I was also happy with my mindset.  I took a terrible beat on the bubble of my first tourney of the day, a $5 Deepstack on Bovada, with 1010<99 with about 22 left (18 pay) for heaps.  I was able to bounce back and just keep rolling.

What I'm not at all happy with is my bubble play.  I find myself giving up too easily on pots at this point, thinking to myself that I need to just cash, and then see what happens.  It's a terrible mindset to have.  I'm trying to be better about it, but days like this…well, it reinforces the bad play.  I have to get out of that line of thinking, and be more aggressive.

All in all, a $140 profit day is fantastic.  If the goal is $500-$1000 a month, that's a great start.

Had an interesting situation happen to me today.  Drove to the nearest casino (90 miles away), to play some cash for the day.  Started off well, flopping the nuts with KQ on the button vs an aggressive open, although he didn't call my river shove, which was odd considering he only had about 10BB behind.

Anyway, that guy took a seat change, and was sitting in the 3 seat, while I was in the 8.  I raised from EP with AKs, got two callers to a flop of KJJ.  I value bet 3 streets, which was fine, and got paid off.  But afterward, the guy from the first hand said, “You didn't like that flop much did you.”  I told him that it wasn't my favorite, but it's fine.  He then proceeded to mock me, saying I was readable, and everything was written on my face.

Now, as someone who doesn't play live much, I'm guessing he was probably correct.  Which is something I'm obviously going to work on.  But he went on for about 30-45 seconds of mocking me.  It made me feel very ashamed, frankly, and embarrassed.

Interestingly, we played one more hand, and he paid me off with top 2 vs my straight, and again gave me a stare down and a lecture.  It was extremely awkward and again, embarrassing.

Now, a better player wouldn't have said anything to me, and just used the information to beat me.  This guy, obviously, was not as smart, and made his own mistakes, dropping about 5/600 while I was there at a 1/2 game.

I, on the other hand, left after about 2 hours.  Mind you, I spent more time in the car on my round trip than I did in the casino.  That being said, I left having won just under a full buyin during that time, but now I have very little inclination to go play there again.

I'm happy to listen to any thoughts you might have.

Thanks. Mike

I haven't written in quite some time.  Unfortunately, I'm just putzing around when it comes to this goal.  Life has been busy, good, but busy, so I get to play maybe once a week, twice if I'm lucky.  It's hard to get in a good rhythm, and I'm making bad decisions late.

The good news is that I remain break even.  I've inched ahead barely, but just keep struggling trying to find that big breakthrough win that could help me get in to some good tournaments.  The bad news is that while I'm playing $2, $3, $5, and sometimes $10 tournaments, I just pull a Chris Moon and finish 7th when I FT.

I think the biggest weaknesses in my play remain bubble play, and when I get to that weird 20-35BB stack size.  Today, I absolutely biffed the two biggest tournaments I was in on those two very things.  One, I blinded down to about 6BB 3 off a bubble, and shoved with A9 only to get called by A7 by a huge stack, who binked a 7.  I shove with 15-20BB, he's likely not calling.

I also had a situation where I had 21BB, getting close to the bubble, and had AK.  From EP, I just 2.1 raised, was called in two spots to a J44 flop which was checked around.  A K hit, I lead out, was raised, called.  Blank on the river, and was shoved all in by 94s.  I find myself second guessing again whether I should have just shoved, but then think maybe that's results oriented thinking.

Either way, it's fun to be able to play, and I'm glad I'm not LOSING money, but I really wish I had some bigger successes.
