Hello nation,

been playing poker since summer 2012. My bankroll looked like the skyline of the Alps (down… and up, and up and down and up and down… u get the idea). I cashed some big tourneys (big for me meaning 5 – $20 Buyin wiht huge fields) but lost it all (or at least most of it) in a few days. I thought I had some kind of BR management, but actually did't (I noticed that when I read the TPE BRM article). Also I felt like sometimes I was the boss and knew exactly how to rule the table and what to do and on other occasions nothing worked the way I thought it was supposed to.

I didn't have the experience (playing 10000s of hands I mean) to understand variance and constantly wondered if I was making the right play in the long run or not (I did read harringtons 3 tourney books). I felt that I had it in me somehow, loved the game but was very unsure if there was even the chance to get to a level where it would be profitable or not.

Now a month ago I joined TPE and “holy bigdogs” has my game improved! The most important thing I learned from the many videos I've watched is knowing the (approximately) right play. For example I did light 3betting before, but always felt like this was maybe wrong in the long run (Dan Harrington doesn't mention it in his book ;- ).

Still I am a little unsure if the success I had this month will continue but I feel much more positive about it than ever.

Love heart this site, though I wouldn't recommend it to anyone – how can you want to give this knowledge to other players? wink

Maybe I'll post the developement of my BR for this month if I find the time.

So just wanted to say thanks and please keep it up.

I'll use this as some kind of poker diary. Will help to keep track of my game. Maybe I'’ll add some ideas on my general play later on, to help improving, finding leaks etc.

I started the month with 50€ and added another 50€ because of the SCOOP 20% deposit bonus a few days later. I was pretty much broke due to my rollercoster poker results before. Didn’'t deposit anything later on and am planing on never depositing ever again. 🙂

So I went from about $140 to $2500 in a month (with quite some volume though) in my BR with addition $850 cashout.

First I grinded the $0.50 turbo SNGs (45, 90 and 360). I finished 1st quite a few times in the 360 (which has 3 min blind increase instead of the normal 5 min). Guess I got lucky there quite a few times. Anyways postflop aggression is the key.

About half of my tourneys are the 50ct microstakes (~500 tourneys played). My OPR in these is 99,91% which I am pretty proud of. I'd like these precentages in the higher orbits for the future. 😉

When my BR was about $250 I started adding in some $1.10 MTTs and $2.50 SNGs.

I love the $1r and $2r tourneys, especially 6-max with 15 min blindlevels. The fields are incredibly week. You can exploit almost every single player and won't have to get in any flip situations if your stack is comfortable enough.

The noteable winnings were:

– $1.10+R 6-max: 1/297 ($230 win)
– $2.50 180 turbo: 2/180 ($82)
– Big $11 (via $4 SAT): 44/9700 ($180)
– $2.20+R ($6 total BI): 2/2253 ($1,621)
– $2.20 6-max (15min blinds) 1/1913 ($632) *
– $5.50+R: 3/805 ($1224) (I made 6 rebuys for a total buyin of $40!)

* I exploited the $2.20 6-max really in a sick way. I checked the OPR stats for every player at my table and there were about 60% totally fish, and maybe 3% of the players had OPT ratings of 95% and more. I was almost never flatting and raising more than 30% (almost every K and A hand in unopened pots). I 3bet light almost once in an orbit. And Cbettet with what felt like 90% success. I had guys with 100% cbet fold over 120 hands. lol

I noticed I splash some money after almost every bigger winning. That's definitly a money leak. Most money goes away with rebuys and expensive SATs for bigger tourneys when I splash. Will be working on that in the future.

Hey TPE.

I want to use this thread as my poker journal with sporadic updates.

Now until August I've only been playing on pokerstars.eu.

So let's start with posting my results for Juin this year.Juin 2013Image Enlarger

My ABI had increased by a factor of more than 4. Now fields were a little tougher, a lot of ABC and rock poker instead of the spewy insane fishness in the lowest of Buy-Ins but still very very beatable.

I think that I played too many Rebuys and too many SATs. My SAT ROI on stars.eu isn't that great and I almost never unregisteres from the target tourneys. I think this is a great BR leak.

When my PS.eu BR is big enough again ($2000+) I will focus on playing the $2+R toruneys, a lot of $5 FOs as well as some $10 toruneys and the $5 2R1A quads. I think in these lies the highest ROI with a pretty safe BR management. Also playing The Bigs ranging from $4.40 to $16.50 should be all right.

I should avoid 5R turbos and 10R in general as well as most satelites except for some cheap and rare ones like for The Big $22 and $33.

The noteable winnings were:

– $5.50+R 2xturbo: 3/1700 (~$2500) (variance is too high in these for my BR!)
– $2.20+R turbo: 6/1800 (~$550) (love the field and expected ROI should be above 100% but got bad beat 9999 vs my TT in preflop AI)
– 9/1190 in The Big $33 (via SAT): I was 6th getting dealt AK, ran into AQ-snapshove (pre AI) and villain binked his Q and I was out 9th place. This one really hurt because there was about $5k on top.
– $8.80 6-max (10 min blinds): 7/500 ($88) (really sad 7th finish)

That's about it, everything else were very minor ITM finishes, far away from the FT.

I understand if you are sick of listening to badbeat stories. I just need to write this down for the record, so feel free to skip to the last sentence of my post. 🙂

During this month plenty of pretty painful badbeats deep in some tourneys began to occure. I had some of these in May, too, but not as many and they didn't hurt as much because of my really low buy-ins.

Two of them I still remember.

First was in a $3.30 Rebuy, 16 players away from FT with about $2k on top. I was 3rd with a M higher than 20. I had great phish on our table who pushed AI every once in an orbit. When he pushed again from UTG+2 I was holding KK in on the CO. I snapped him. He was holding A6s and hit his Ace on the river. I was left with about 20 BB, got dealt AK in one of the next hands, raised to his SB (or button, not sure). He reraised and I shoved. Got snap called with the piss-phissssh holding Ace-Rag-suited again. Well I missed my King and he hit his Rag-kicker, kicking me out for some change money.

This sounds standard, but happened to me in similar ways from that day on, slowly setting me on tilt and killing my profit.

The greatest beat I had was on the 6/1800 finish of the $2R turbo tourney. I was 3rd in chips but OPR let me know that I had three total fish (OPR < 50%) at the table and only one pro (OPR > 99%). Well as everyones M (except for the chipleader) was pretty low and I didn't expect the shortstack fish to call light I pushed my A6s from the SB. BB called and showed JTs. He hit and had me down to 5th place with maybe 12BB. Two hands later I get dealt TT. I push against a UTG minraise. Get called. He shows 99, I think nice, I may be back and rule again. Well wrong thinking as he flopped quads. Wow!

Also my AK vs AQ preflop allin loss at The Big $33 FT hurt.

From then on I didn't score any notable winning in Juin. Will post about the next months soon.

For the mods: Can you please change the topic title to “Great first month, thanks to TPE + poker journal of 2013”. Thanks guys.

Now for July 2013.

This was the month that almost destroyed my faith in myself ever playing poker professionally.

Take a look at my bankroll:

Image Enlarger

Now, I couldn't believe the bad beats I experienced and the fact that I had dumped my complete BR AGAIN.

The noteable winnings were:

– none

Before my days at TPE I had had some success in tourneys but without a deep understanding of the game. I played the situation and sometimes I was really good in understanding gameflow and adjusting profitable, but I had no idea if a line was good in general. When variance hit me (just a quick example: my TT getting coolered by KK with myself having a stack of about 16 BB – I now was in doubt if getting it in pre was the right play [which of course it is]) I never knew if I made the wrong decision or if it was just variance. Watching TPE videos taught me all of that and more (like the concept of 3betting light, ranging opponents, correct stack play etc.). And when I read the BR management article I thought I had fixed one of my biggest leaks (I was playing an average 1/20 BI of my BR before).

Luckily I had set some money set aside the last two month, because I didn't make any cashouts in July! Another important lesson to learn for me: have always some money set aside!

Nevertheless at the end of the month I wasn't sure if I should ever continue to pursue my poker goal: living and at the same time building an ever growing BR from poker. There you have my all time goal.

After analyzing this devastating month I realized I hadn't learned my lesson yet.

My ABI was slightly lower than the month before, but I didn't adjust correctly when I kept losing more of my bankrole (mostly due to variance especially when down to 1 to 2% of the field). It is still tough for me to look at lower prize pool when you just began comfortable with looking at about $2k+ for first place. Also I did have more experience and knowledge about “the right play”, but I began to doubt again and most importantly didn't put in the time to watch TPE pro videos for a second time to readjust my game. Great mistake!

Recognizing my most grave leaks was one step toward an other attempt of pursuing my poker goals, but I wasn't yet sure how to start with the $5 in my account left.
