6 weeks or bust

I quit my job in July 2011 and went travelling the world with my wife (South America, India, Australia, Far East) and while on a beach in Cambodia I stumbled on the TPE podcast, instantly loved it and now decided to become a member.

I have 2 weeks before I return to the cold of London, but have 6 weeks off before I go back to work. So after some pleading with my wife I am going to grind low/mid stakes MTT'S for 6 weeks solid as of the 19th May. I have told her how much I want to try and make a living at poker but have never had the time to do it (I work 14 hours a day) so after some pleading/guilt tripping she has agreed, she even set me a bankroll, which was way more than I planned myself (my last bankroll went on 5 star hotel for a week and a flight out of a hell hole in Vietnam) So she owes me one!

The aim is simple… Can I make a regular income from Poker and and generate the same money for our rent, bills etc… that my job would.

I know 6 weeks might not be a lot but it is a good test and the only chunk of time I will ever have in my life to test my skills or lack of out. If I do achieve my aim then I will take 6 months off work with money set a side for rent, bills etc… and see if I can sustain it for that long.

If I can do that, well I will call up my boss and tell him to **** off.

So In the mean time I am watching as many TPE video's I can squeese in between 18 hour bus journeys through Thailand and some Chipmeup.com backed events whenever I mange to find a decent internet connection.

Can't wait for May 19th.

Cheers guys… I'll be updating the thread everyday with my progress. Nice way of getting some feedback and extra motivation (not that I need it) for the 6 weeks. Planning which games to play ie. Morning, afternoon and evening grinds, just that I have a plan of what I am playing given the time of the day. I'm hoping to do all day sessions but have to balance it out with spending time with the wife and not pissing her off by over playing.

In Koh Chang, Thailand at the moment thunderstroms and rain. Might have a game…

Here is my planned Poker schedule. No turbo's, though about it as there are some nice GTD one's and I am a good SNG Turbo player, but shocking at turbo MTT's so going to keep to normal MTT's with 15 minute clock 1500 – 3000 starting stake. I plan to play no more than 4 MTT's at a time in order to focus on more on what going on rather than playing 10 at a time and not having a clue who is 3 betting light etc… Plus, I have to think of my wife and spend time with her, family etc… After all I have been away for a year travelling… So, what do you think?

good luck!!  obviously 6 weeks is not necessarily enough to overcome variance (although you might run on the good side of it!) but **** it..you got the time, the bankroll and the approval.  nothing to lose and everything to gain!  go for it, have fun and keep us informed!!!

I also love that someone was listening to our podcast on a beach in Cambodia!!  cool

i dont wanna sound negative but since i've been there i can tell you at this buyin level its pretty hard to make a solid living (especially for 2 people). with an ABI around 10 you have to grind way more tourneys/day to have a somehow acceptable income.

for calculation its best to think with a ROI of 10-20%

in 6 weeks everythings psbl but in the long run I think you can start thinking to make a living from poker when you are a winning player with an ABI around 30$ – but thats just me

Thanks for the advice badabing78. You are right, pretty hard to make a living at these levels. I guess the other purpose during the 6 weeks other than trying to make a profit is am I the sort of person who can sit at a computer all day and play poker? Do I have the patience, stamina and willingness to make this my life. I think 6 weeks is a good enough time to find this out about myself. I love the idea of grinding everyday, but do I really want to, would it drive me mad?

If I pass my own test, have a taste for and do well in the 6 weeks then I guess that makes my decision to try it for 6 months professionally an simple one where I can have a bigger roll and play bigger buy in's.

Interesting time anyway, value your feedback.

Just arrived to Bangkok, third time this year (bit of a central travel hub) after a 7 hour journey. Calculated the wife have travelled on over 50 long distance bus journeys with the hours totalling up to 1 month 2 days. I guess I must have some patience to sit through that.

2 weeks 1 day until we go back to England and no buses.

The fact that you have set yourself a goal is already a great deal! I always tell myself this: PAD=patience, aggression, discipline. Good luck and play well !

What kind of job did you have and how do you afford all this traveling? Sounds like you can afford to play higher buy ins. wink

I'm a cop and the wife works for the health service. Normal paid jobs, we have just done it on a shoe string for a year, about £12,000 about $19,000 which includes flights. I joined when I was 22 and 8 years later after becoming a detective two years ago, seeing and doing all manner of crazy shit it was time for a break before a mortgage and rugrats… Have to go back, but would rather not.

i think you get used to the grind pretty fast when you went through all those long distance bus drives, the grind is similiar 😉

1 tip: it seems you are capable of 4tabling, try to get comfortable with 6-8 tabling that helps to get a solid volume in. just always add 1 table and you will be surprised how fast you get used to it.

Having FT'd the Big $2 yesterday for $195 for 7th place it has made me rethink my plans. As we all know FT's are top heavy with the money and after 8 hours I'm not overly happy with $195 if I'm looking to make some serious money. I've been thinking about comments on this threat about how difficult my present 6 week schedule we be in making decent money.

I get backed regularly on a staking website CHIPMEUP.COM and usually only have to invest 1/3 myself for a 50% return. Given my bankroll and this backing I have revisied my schedule and wondered what you guys thought of it.

I wont be playing all of these each day. It just gives me an idea of what games are running at diffent times.

imo thats a much better schedule,

but I would advice to add some of the HOT (turbo) tourneys  and a lil more 22$-55$ smaller field tourneys to reduce the variance a lil, cause those huge field tourneys can be brutal!

edit:  also have a look at some of the 10$ rebuy tourneys! 😉

Not a massive fan of turbos but ill take a look at them. $10 rebuys sound a good idea.

the good thing with turbos, they are not that time consuming and play great on the side, and if you have a solid push fold game (easy to develop with tpe vids ;)) you have a real edge on those fields in the smaller buyin turbos

I then have another event posted on CMU (CHIPMEUP.COM) Getting very excited. My wife is as well and has told me to win enough to buy a house, hmmmmmmmm we'll see hun!

Not the best start in Main Event $109. Got up to 33K but after that couldn't get things going. No worries though. More MTT's tomorrow!

Two weeks in, awful start. Played dozen of MTT's and have cashed for a huge $11. Getting deep just the usual up's and downs of watching AA losing to 87s etc… Hey ho. Off to Scotland for a week, so having a break from poker but the laptop is full of TPE video's so will study and come back with a fresh head on… Grrrr this poker bizzo is hard. The wife is still cool about it though, for now 🙂

Have you thought about playing on other sites where the fields are smaller? The payouts are top heavey eg top 3 – 12 for field sizes 35 – 120, but it is soo much easier to get there. With smaller fields sizes I think you can play higher buyins/ Granted these tourneys aren't for mega bucks prizes but a steady stream of $400 – $4000 cashes is quite nice plus confidence building taking down the tourneys. You can then use a portion of your roll to play the big prize money events on the major sites.

I've recently done this to great effect making approfit of $5000 in just 3 weeks from smaller MTTs. Played approx 150 cashing approx 10% but the difference is that 50% of the cashes are wins. These tourneys typically only take 3-5hrs max.
