Responsibilities as a Poker Player

Hi guys. I been thinking again… not always the best thing but sometimes it is fruitful.

Anyway, I was thinking about responsibilities we all have as poker players both on and off the felt. I think no matter if we are simply a poker enthusiast, an amateur, a part-time pro, or a full time pro, we have a responsibility to make the game a little better in whatever way we can. Anyway I started this thread to hopefully get some discussion on everyone's thoughts on this and their ideas on what these responsibilities may be. I'll start.

I think that my main flaw as a poker player is 100% emotional. I get down too easily when I play well and things don't go my way. I am guilty of taking this frustration out on other players at times both in live and online games. I feel that it is my responsibility as a poker player for my own sake, the sake of the table or tables I am currently playing at, and the sake of the game of poker as a whole to control my emotions at the table and just keep my mouth shut or the cursor out of the chat box when things get rough at the table. Any thoughts or comments on this will be appreciated.

What are some responsibilities that you think that we have as poker players to ourselves or to the poker community as a whole? Joining PPA? Bringing new players into the game?

it might be different for me because i live outside the US, but i dont see poker players having any responsibility at all – its only a game after all.

i suppose one thing that some people could do better is welcoming in new players to the game – if you are playing some low limit cash game at the casino, berating the donk that just sucked out on you is the WORST thing you could do because he is the donator. some people like to berate people as a result of their own egos.

so i suppose not tapping the glass would be the number one responsibility.

Interesting post. I am not sure if we all have a responsibility but I did want to comment on your thought towards your emotions in poker. I feel one of the greatest things about being a poker player for me is that I have such control of my emotions which transfers into my everyday life. For example, I used to be such a tempermental person, if I hit my head on a cupboard I would curse and punch something. Same at the beginning of my poker playing, I would throw my mouse or pound my desk when the stupid bad beats would come. NOW!…I have been playing poker for 6+ years and I have learned to take any and all bad beats with stride and I just give a shoulder shrug. Once you have been playing as long as a bunch of us have, I think we have all seen the 1 outers come a ton and the bad downswings that never end. At the end of the day, my poker hobby has given me a more balanced look at life. Nothing in poker tilts me anymore and the transfers to my everday life.

P.S. With that said, I see guys still posting bad beats all the time and hear about people still thinking they are the unluckiest ever. Seriously, poker is probably not for them. Get over it!

Interesting thought. I think something that I have taken on a bit more as a player is a responsibility to represent myself in the most dignified and professional manner possible. I fly the TPE flag proudly as my avatar on Stars and AP and I make sure that I don't do anything in chat or say anything to players to cast a negative light on us. I am not opposed to cracking aces with 45s and will never stop that (which usually leads to all sorts of fun), or playing my game as I see fit, but I think I have a responsibility to uphold a certain professional image at the table and I take it very seriously. We all get upset when a run gets derailed by something unexpected or unwanted, but we just have to deal. It is all a part of the game. Even Aces lose some percent of the time. Random probablility sucks, but be professional. I can't imagine something happening at work that I don't like and it being acceptable to tell the person to get hit by a car or some other such nicety.
