Was listening to this podcast today, although more cash orientated Bart talked some good stuff about emotional control and not being result oriented. Right near the end he made a statement that he doesn’t know why people play tournament poker instead of cash games. He aligned it to buying a ticket to the lottery, albeit the pros might have 5 tickets for one buy-in compared to some who have 0 tickets for one buy-in.
I was amazed at what this guy was saying, I can understand he prefers cash games and tutors people so its in his interest to promote cash over tournament poker. But for an experienced player to state in a roundabout way that it’s not a game of skill bemuses me.
I just wanted to vent my spleen really, and ask if anyone knows Bart please could they give him a wedgie from everyone here at TPE!

I stopped listening to this podcast after thinking that a couple of episodes were pretty uninteresting and aimless. (Ryan Eriquezzo and some Aussie guy).
Jared seemed to just let his guests talk without interruption, when some direction or waffle reduction would have improved the podcast. The high standards of the Thinking Poker podcast probably influenced my opinion too.
But perhaps I am wrong. What 'mental game' podcasts in your opinion or the opinion of other TPE members are worth listenting to?

I personally think not all players are up for the mtt grind. When you hear a player say “buy a lottery ticket” it makes sense in their mind due to the fact they can make their hourly rate playing cash vs. grinding a mtt for 5 hours just to make the money, then get their Aces cracked for minimal gain.
I like playing cash, but the mtt grind is where I gravitate to due to the challenge of that big score or deep run. However, If you can't handle the variance and swings, mtts aren't for you. I am in the midst of a hellacious down swing on one of the sites I play on where I am getting it in good like EVERY time just to come up short. I tell myself though that if I stay within my roll and play the best I can, things will turn around. Some players have a hard time with this so they aren't as big of a fan of the mtt world.

Bart makes some assumptions about people and tends to stereotype. I just think its a sign of immaturity. He started to justify his judgement that older people play a certain way. And followed it up with saying to the effect that Women dont make good cash game players. I asked him if he ever heard of Vanessa Selbst? I am in my 60s and have no fear when it comes to 3 or 4 betting or pushing when needed. He wouldnt hear of it. I dont take what he says theoretically about the game seriously. Though he does have some good strategical info.

Some good comments re: tournaments and cash… terbett's comment echoes something Greg Merson has said before. If cash game players want to play tournaments thinking they are just a lottery, tournament players should welcome them with open arms…
That said, a problem for me is 'mental game'… playing when tired… looking for entertainment… ! You know the kind of results this achieves! So perhaps I should play cash…

If you examine variance you'll get really scared. In some ways MTT's can be like buying a lottery ticket and the long term can be literally playing 'years' before variance evens out. Cards have no memory and if you're on the wrong side of variance it's pretty tough.
Read the following article by NoahSD which gives a pretty good description of variance involved in MTT's.
