I can tell you from my experience I find it substantially more comfortable to be there from the start. Since I tend to play very tight at the start of tourneys I prefer to be there from the start to maximize the number of opportunities I have to pick up a premium hand and win a big pot. I tend to feel very pressured if I start up very late and come in short stacked.

I don't late reg for turbo MTT's.
I hate getting 2000 chips when we've already reached 50/100 blinds. I put too much pressure on myself to double fast.
I'll late reg for almost anything else if it's still within the first half hour of the start time.
But I'm the opposite of you – I come from a cash game back ground so I'm more comfortable playing deep stacked and am still in the process of learning +EV spots on a 30 BB or less stack.
