Right guys, it's time to figure out once and for all what is the greatest movie of all time!!

Beisides poker, movies are my passion. i just love watching a great movie, then discussing it inside and out with my mates, comparing our top movies and debating on who is the best actors/directors etc *cough* Kubrick *cough* 🙂

Thats why, if this sparks enough interest, i would like to do a bracket style tournament, featuring imdb.com's top 250 movies of all time. we'll put movies head to head and we'll all vote for our favourite of the 2, until we are down to the eventual winner.

I will also put movies into seeds, so that movies high up on the list wont battle each other until we get down to the nitty gritty (if they make it that far)

obviously to make it easier for the bracket's sake, it would make more sense to have 256 movies, down to 128, 64, 32 etc. So everyone can pick 5 movies that are not on the list that they would like to see in the tournament, as 'wild cards'. The 6 movies that receive the most votes will be put in. Here is the imdb.com list:

…../chart/top

Like i said if this sparks interest i will do it, so please show your support for this by posting in this thread, along with your 5 wild card movies 🙂

Gotta have genres 🙂

I'll start with Drama:

Life as a house, American beauty

Overall has gotta be Donnie Darko though and Grosse Pointe Blank rates right up there!

Most of my favorite movies are on the list already, with two exceptions:

John Carpenter's The Thing – possibly the best horror movie of all time

Galaxy Quest – Highly under rated and fun comedy and a great adventure

finding that most of my faves are on the list (Jaws, Apocolypse Now, Reservoir Dogs, Memento, etc.)

But I came up with the following:

The Breakfast Club

Glengarry Glen Ross

Wild At Heart

Let The Right One In

Heathers

I'm sure I forgot something…

this is a great thread. my dad was a film critic for our paper in the late 60s early 70s, so we love to discuss film. i was brought up watching all the old classics even the early silents from the teens and 20s. alot of foreign stuff too i have a huge passion for film and even have a notebook with a bunch partial script drafts, scenes and ideas ive been working on over the years. would love to write a full screenplay some day. anyway checked out the list cant say i agree with alot of it. some those movies i wouldnt rate in the top 1,000.

here are just a few for your consideration:

The Killing(1956) great heist film by kubrick

Big Wednesday(1978) epic surf/coming of age. with a young and crazy Gary Busey

                             Diabolique(1955) french hitchcockian style thriller

The Burbs(1989) i dont know why but every time i watch it gets funnier

He Who Gets Slapped(1924) silent lon chaney gem

In Bruges(2007) amazing screenplay was deservedly nominated for an oscar. great black comedy

Im sure some of the older movies here won't appeal to everyone but if u give them a try you might be suprised.

speaking of QT i love True Romance. I believe it was the first script he wrote even though Dogs was made first. It was directed by Tony Scott and he did make the movie more linear and changed the original ending but  it was still great.

Oceans Eleven was actually on my list, but changed to chasing Amy at the last minute.

Obviously this thread is going strong, so I will do this!! I will leave the wildcard voting for another 24 hours, at which point if 6 movies haven’t clearly stood out with votes, the 6 movies in here that are rated the highest on imdb will take the spots 🙂

Also i'd like to get some feedback on how many matches to do at a time, and how long for. I was thinking:

Round 1 (256 to 128) and Round 2 (128 to 64) – 4 matches, 24 hours

Round 3 (64 to 32) – 4 Matches, 48 hours

Round 4 (32 to 16) and Round 5 (16 to 8) – 2 Matches, 48 Hours

Final 8 to winner – 1 Match, 72 hours.

Sound good?

Would be heaps easier to start on genres and narrow down. Maybe even separate threads?
I’ll +1 for The breakfast club and St Elmo’s fire too!

The Pokercast had a pretty good format for their comic maddness etc ones.
Gl figuring it out;)

obvious problem with genre based is heaps of great movies are hard to classify and get chucked in 'classics'

Good point duggs.

So far, chasing Amy, oceans eleven, goonies, blow and the breakfast club have gotten more than one mention, so they are the front runners, with 1 other spot to fill. 🙂

I wish I would have seen this post earlier…i've been managing a movie theatre for the better part of the last 13 years.  I know it's new but Cabin in the Woods was one of the best movies I've seen in years.  and a vote for dumb and dumber by far one of my favorite movies ever.
