There are so many opinions out there on how many buy-ins you need to play mtt's. I wanted to get some peoples input on this. I've seeen some say 100 some say 250. What guide lines do most use here? How do you factor in Turbo vs. non and rebuys vs freeze?

100 is pretty aggressive for large scale MTTs if you can't afford to redeposit.  250 is a better rule of thumb.  A lot of pros will go even bigger.

Turbos and rebuys need to be scaled. There will be more variance in turbos and you will spend more than your usual ABI in a rebuy.

It depends what rebuy rules you create for yourself, too. I'll double my stack at the beginning and cap myself at double rebuying twice so I don't let it get out of hand.

My ABI is probably $12 or something like that but in this example a 5r could cost me $30.

If you have a $2000 br I'd say play mostly $5 freezeouts and make your “shots” be a 5r or a 5 cubed/quad. I wouldn't play the $16.5 turbo on a regular basis or some of the more high variance stuff.

Personally, I think this also depends a lot on how much you play. If you're going for supernova elite on stars and are playing 30 multi-table sng's at once for eight hours a day, you'll likely need at least 250 buy-ins. If you play only one table at a time and four tourneys a day, 100 is probably enough. Never hurts to be on the safe side though.

Lastly, your roll constantly fluctuates, which means you need to adjust, not just following strict guidelines for roll/buy-in ratios but also your own comfort level. My own roll is currently at about 600 buy-ins, which is a bit too big (couple of big live cashes to “blame”). Still, I don't feel comfortable yet playing at four times my current level, but hope to get there soon enough 🙂
