1. any lol moments where you can’t believe the stupidity of some criminals?
I have too many funny stories. I guess the best 3 are the woman who shop lifts at a store and leaves her purse on the counter with her ID. The guy who breaks his leg doing a burglary and has to call for help. And the guy who parks in front of a bank and does a robbery and runs to the car only to see he locked his keys inside 🙂
2. How’d you become a cop?
I taught martial arts for years after the military, several kids I taught had parents who were into law enforcement and they talked me into it.
3. How many partners have you had? Is it like the movies where your partner is like your brother?
My department has about 800, most units dont have partners but I have been in some specialty units that required partners. Most became very good friends but remember the movies isnt close to reality as far as law enforcement is concerned. But most of my partners and I always got along and had some very fun times.
4. Any interesting technology emerging in law enforcement?
Well there are some cool less than lethal devices that are always being developed. The taser, sage are two big ones on the market today. Also tracking ability for cell phones on or off is very nice. Also development of cars that dont look like your standard police cruiser. Software involving maping to show crime trends, gps in police vehicles. Data base sharing among agencies etc etc.
compare and contrast the show CSI with reality.
same question, but with Law and Order (Jerry Orbach edition)
how big are you physically (feel free to dodge this one if you like)? Tales of the tape of the biggest and smallest (male) cops you’ve seen/know of?
after 13 years on the job, do you look back and recommend this as a career?
do you have anything on your “rapsheet”?
1. What is the best way to talk your way out of a ticket? if there is a way (say going 7-15mph over, not in a school zone or anything)
2. How often do cops give out mips to ages 19-20 and how often do they just take the beer away and give a warning at a house or apartment party?
sry if they are dumb questions, these 2 just popped in my head first

I lol everytime I go to a case and someone say ” But on CSI they did….”. Some of the stuff they do is based on real forensic work but its been blown way out of water. In fact 90% of all departments forensic teams are non-law enforcement folks and they dont help at all with investigating the case. They just gather, collect and record evidence.

No idea, havent watched Law and Order since ages ago.

Im almost 6’1 and about 235. Smallest cop a female 5ft, probably about 105 lbs. The biggest is tough to say I knew one that was 6’9 probably about 320.

This is a question that is hard to answer without writing a book. Its unlike any other line of work you can do. You are your own boss about 80% of the time. Its actioned packed in that no two days are alike. Its a rush and fun as helll sometimes and a heart breaker the next. You will lose all your old friends once you become a cop because cops for the most part only hang around cops. You will learn to not trust many people and see the worst in everyone and every situation. Thats kind of a good and bad thing because by thinking this way you probably will stay alive. Police have the highest suicide rate, divorce rate and alcoholism rate of any other profession. After retirement we only live an average of 5 more years. The stress just takes it out of you. Would I do it again, without a doubt 🙂

Yes I was a bad juvenile 🙂
1. What is the best way to talk your way out of a ticket? if there is a way (say going 7-15mph over, not in a school zone or anything)
School zones are tough because of the safety issues involved with them. I will tell you I dont stop anyone until they hit 12 over. The best way to talk your way out is to just simply be honest and say yeah I know I was going fast, I was just trying to get home and I know your just doing your job. Its a breath of fresh air being honest and I dont know how many people I have told that by simply being honest Im only going to give you a warning and I let them go. Obviously that wont work if your doing like 20 over. I have also pulled a ton of cops over for speeding off duty. I never wrote nor will I ever write a cop a ticket. But when I let them go for say speeding, no one else that night gets a speeding summons from me.
2. How often do cops give out mips to ages 19-20 and how often do they just take the beer away and give a warning at a house or apartment party?
Not sure I know what a “mip” is. It depends on why we got the call, how old the kids are, how many kids, how trashed are they, and how they act. If their under 18 and I dont do anything and something happens to this juvenile I could be sued and liable for what happens. At the minimum I have to at least take them home. I have been to parties and they pissed me off and I wrote or arrested 20 people. I have been to a graduation party with several hundred that I put all in cars with sober people who could drive and sent them on their way. It just all depends.
sry if they are dumb questions, these 2 just popped in my head first
No all good…Im suprised I havent seen any tough ones yet on the law like consent, search and seizure, plain view etc etc or how many people have you killed, how many people have you caught screwing, whats the most gross thing you have seen 🙂

This absolutely shocks me. 5 years? Don’t most cops retire in their 40’s or so?
The best answer is simply “No”. If i have the legal right to search your car Im not asking, simple enough. I have asked to search a house before because I had enough information to believe they had a grow-op inside. The guy said “No” so I said ok, and told him I was freezing the home and was going to apply for a search warrant, he let me search because he didnt want to wait but I was serious. There are a lot of factors to consider in getting consent to search, like how many officers were present, did the person feel free to leave. How many times did the officer ask, how did he ask. But again you could simply say “No” and if he asks why simply tell him you dont have the time to wait. If he continues on, I would simply say I have already said no to the search and am I free to leave?
Im not giving legal guidance on how to beat the system if your breaking the law and you get caught its on you. Im simply telling you your legal right.
(1) Does it do any good to have that sticker on your car that shows you gave money to some police charity? Whenever I see those i think “well he clearly put that there to get out of a ticket in the future”.
(2) Do you like watching cop shows? NYPD Blue, Southland, etc? Or once you are off work you are sick of hearing/talking about/seeing it?
(3) You know the whole “if the cop does not show up at your court date, you get out of a ticket” thing? How often do you have to show up at some stupid court hearing for a 15mph over ticket and waste your time that you could be doing something else? And what % of the time would you say you do not show up?
(4) I once got attacked in a McDonalds parking lot by some crazy guy in Los Angeles. A witness was a Ford Dealership owner who gave an absolute spot on description of the truck. I got 5 of the 7 digits of the license plate. They told me they could not find him. I’m assuming they just did not try very hard, right? I mean, with that much detail I have to assume they could find the vehicle at least? This incident has had me on life tilt ever since. lol

1. No they dont do any good for the most part.
2. I actually like ” The First 48 hours” and “Cold Case Files”… if I wasnt a Sergeant already I would have loved to been a homicide detective.
3. Well in our area the officer prosecutes all their own cases except domestics and felony charges (some areas they have DA handle everything) we get in trouble for missing court so it doesnt happen often. I would only go to court if A) I could win against the officer or B) You have some evidence or information that may not get you found innocent but may lessen the charge or punishment. Everyone can have no greater than +5 points on your driving record and you want to keep it as high as possible for insurance reasons.
4. Well I would say that if you had 5 of the 7 assuming they are correct we may be able to ID the vehicle through DMV. On the spot we BOLO the vehicle, take a report and send it on to a detective to try and research the tag. If we can ID the truck it still not enough, who knows who was driving it. We would have to talk with the owner see if he matches the suspect description and if so do a photo line up and see if your or the witness could ID the guy. Then charge him if so and everyone is off to court. However, they may not have been able to ID the vehicle and if so your dead in the water unless more information comes up.
Depends…how did the officer come into contact with you? Were you being an ass, how old are you? For the most part if there is no big issue for why Im talking with you and your being cool I simply have people poor it out. But again there are a lot of things I take into consideration.
fun thread! I am too Swedish to have any serious questions but I am reading with interest.
Hill Street Blues was a sacred institution in our house when I was a kid (Belker and Esterhaus were kings).
Do you love donuts?
Also, there is a JDAWG something guy constantly at my tables on AP, is that you?
Hahaha donuts funny story about them.
One night I was working it was like Thanksgiving or Christmas years ago. I was starving and they only thing open was a Dunkin Donuts and it was crowded. I was like fuck I dont want to go in there because of the cop shit you hear. But I was very hungry, tired and in a bad mood in general. So I go in and Im in line and this big woman a couple people in front of me looks back and rolls her eyes. She says something to her friend and they laughed. Well I knew she had something about me and I decided to let it go but then she looks back at me again and says to me with about 5 people standing around. “Just like a cop, hanging around at the donut shop” and smerked. Well I saw red. I said “yeah but it looks like you have been here much more than me by the size of you”…..zzzzzzzzzzzzzziiiiiinnnnggggggggggg!!!!!!!!
Also if I hear one more time ” I didnt do it or he did it” Im going to stab myself in the eye with a pen. People think that stupid shit is funny, but after I have heard it about 10,000 times Im over it. (end of rant)
JDAWG on AP is not me. I just play on PS these days, I need to move some money there and on FT when I find someone to transfer with.

I'm an iraq veteran…..I got some specialty Iraq veteran license plates on mine and my wife's car……..do you think those will help me get out of a ticket once I pull over and the cop notices them????
Not the reason I got them, but a friend of mine asked if they get me out of tickets and was wondering what you would do there…..Obv assuming i'm not speeding like crazy or anything……but rather something minor…..rolling a stop light or barely speeding or something
