The WSOP just released its preliminary 2019 schedule. Just a fraction of the tournaments so far so you can’t really make your plans but something I saw got me thinking about a question. The Big 50 event has four separate Day 1s and you can re-enter each day.
So here is my question. Let’s say you are kind of short stacked (but not desperate) near the end of your Day 1. Does it make sense to make Day 2 with a suboptimal stack or should you step on the gas more than usual late on Day 1 and gamble so you either double up and get healthy or bust so you can re-enter the next day and try to create a better stack?
Also, am I correct in assuming that you can’t bag chips after Day 1A, re-enter on day 1B and bag chips and then combine the two stacks for Day 2?

i have not seen the full details of this tourney yet, but im guessing no. I’ve seen structures before where you can enter again and then sacrifice your smallest stack. This is more likely, but i would say almost zero chance you can combine them.

I’d look to double or reenter near the end of the day. Little point of returning with <10BB.Not clear whether you can bag chips and reenter; in the past you could, and take the best stack forward.
What do you think will be the cash value of 8 big blinds at the end of Day 1?

I don’t know what the structure is, but I expect the tournament to have excellent EV for TPE members. This implies we should take more risks when a rebuy or reentry is available.
8BB will probably be less than starting stack, and won’t have the weak field that you will get at the beginning of the next day. I’d definitely take a flip with overcards vs a pair, even if it was slightly negative chip ev on its face (something I clearly wouldn’t do in a single entry event)

Some additional risk is warranted, but I worry when people start talking about “double up or go home”. An 8bb stack is going to be worth a fair bit at the end of the day, not the sort of thing you should just round to 0 by, say, sticking it in with A8 when you’re UTG2 facing an UTG open. Not that that’s what you’re advocating, but it kinda sounds to me like OP is just ruling out the possibility of carrying forward a short stack period. From an EV perspective, that’s a mistake.
