I was in Vegas last week and played a few tourneys (5) on Venetian and Caesar's (WSOP). Went deep on a Venetian Deepstack, lost a huge hand (set of Js, against two higher pair) that would have given me 65% of chips left, and lost 2 flips (both with pairs against AK) and was out in 5th.

Anyway one hand that has me thinking a lot happened in a WSOPC event.

I had about 80BBs and the villain had about 50. Villain was fairly aggressive.

I open the BTN with Adiamond 7club for 2.2x and the BB flats

Flop:

9club 9diamond 7heart

Villain checks, I cbet 50% pot, Villain check-raises to about 2.7x

What's his range here? I felt any pairs TTs-AAs or even lower would have 3betted pre (maybe AAs or KKs could have slowplayed but villain was OOP and too aggressive IMO to lose value given stack sizes, he'd want to start building a pot right away).

A random 9 probably wouldn't have taken such a strong line, right? A draw (T8, 68) would make some sense.

Any thoughts about his range here?

If he's aggro, self-aware, and views you as competent I can see him c/r'ing 9x. I know I'd do it. Paired lockdown boards like this can make for good leveling wars and a c/r looks so full of it here that he could get you to spazz on him.

Anyways, I'd also add some underpairs to his range because he has reverse implied odds with those and won't reach showdown with the best hand very often so he could be c/r'ing with those.

I agree with you that TT or better is probably 3 betting this deep although some players will just flat TT and even JJ here to not bloat a pot out of position when the flop will usually bring at least 1 overcard.

As played, I don't see a lot of value in coming back over the top of him because we're still deep enough to get blown off our hand unless we're really convinced that he can make a big move with worse.

If he's really aggro/bluffy I'm tempted to call here and call down unless the board gets really ugly for us – i.e. multiple straights being completed.

pretty much agree with everything coolers has said.  I would probably call and call down.  Don't see a whole lot of value in making the pot any bigger.

Thanks Coolers/KB,

It was still early in the tourney (4th-5th level), had no history with this player and I play very tight early on. All the spots taken were for value. Perhaps it might have given another impression but I've doubt it.

Agree 100%, there was no value in coming over the top, because I'd most likely get all the hands that I was beating to fold. I did think about underpairs but besides 88 there wasn't much to worry about. I did call and the Turn brought a 3. He led and I called. River was a Q and he barreled again. I did tank for a while and ended up calling and he turned over T9s.

A couple of players said that they thought the call was good, as the villain took a while to turn over his cards…

C/R'ing the flop with a monster did throw me off on this one since I have been playing tight and not chasing pots too much until this very hand. Perhaps he realized that and thought that if I missed the flop completely he wouldn't get any more value anyway, so taking a strong line could be profitable if I had a piece of the board (or a pocket pair).
