Won Some MTT's---Now afraid to play at higher stakes.

Note: This is the exact post I just put on 2+2, but thought it would be better if I posted it to a community that I could get some serious answers from.

First of all, this is not trying to be a brag post.

Over the past week I've place 2nd ($1900) and 1st $(3500) in the Stars
$1 rebuy tournaments. Obviously I'm pleased with this, and have a
larger roll is what I've always wanted. Finally I can move up!

However, I'm still just playing these micro tournaments. According to a
lot of bankroll strategies, I'm properly rolled for playing 20-30 MTT
and can take some shots at the 50's. But I can't bring myself to going
on losing streaks of over $1000 dollars. So meanwhile, I'm still
playing in tourny's below the $10 buy-in.

I know why I feel this way. Up until last Friday, the most I had in my
account at any 1 time was $300. Losing $100 was a big thing for me. But
now according to my roll and the stakes I can play at, this loss is
totally acceptable, and expected. Even over the past few days (with my
$5000 roll), if I lost 100 bucks, I'd would feel an extreme urge to just
go back to the the $3.25 45-man tourny's, to grind back losses. Is this
absurd? Am I just totally risk adverse?

My obvious dream has ALWAYS been to go pro. My wife hates that I always
talk about it. For years that has been my dream. I've grinded and
grinded, and finally have just taken that huge step. My
question/concern is: When does this feeling go away? When can I expect
to grow comfortable with having this large roll and playing the higher
stakes?

I should also note, that I'm not afraid of the competition. I've studied a lot, and been part of training sites (currently with …..eredge.com)
and feel that my game is pretty decent. Its just I've never made that
big score. Or if I did make a score, I'd donk it off in cash games. I
feel I can be competitive at the higher games, it's just the money seems
so real to me.

I forgot where I read it, but it went something like this

” If you are afraid to lose the money your playing with, you are either playing to high of a limit and you should play something you are comfortable with!”

I personally think you should continue to play the limits you are playing and take a shot every once in awhile.  Keep building your roll where you are till you feel comfortable to move up!

Good luck

Yea it's funny though.  it's not so much the money that I'm afraid to lose. If I lost it, I wouldn't say to myself “damn I really should have cashed some of that out to pay some bills”  I would more be mad that I've now lost the “oppurtunity” to turn this roll into living my dream.  This is what I've wanted for so long, I'm afraid of losing it, you know what I mean?

to be honest this is why I've seekd backing at various points in my poker life.  I've wanted to hold onto that money, and I thought that i was lucky to win whatever tournament I did and that I was just going to give it back.

Just be patient with what you're playing if you're not comfortable.  There's no reason to move up if you don't have to.  Once you consistently are finding whatever you're doing at the lower levels is working, you'll move up on your own.  Your bankroll will show an improvement, as well.

Do I assume that I just got super lucky over the past week.  I mean, I like to think I'm pretty good, and that it took some skill to FT both those tournies. But was it just pure luck?

I guess what I'm asking is: Does winning these 2 touraments show that I'm good enough to move up a few limits? Should I be confident in my skills? Or should I still be playing the micro's a bit more until I FT a few more?

Keep playing the low stakes. You should not play where you are not comfortable. It will make you play scared, and that is not +EV

Agree with most here.  Just play in your comfort zome.  Perhaps mix a bunch of sattys in to you schedule so that you can play bigger tourneys but in the back of your mind know that you got in for $10 or whatever.

No matter what my roll has been over the years, I have neer stopped playing $2-$10 MTTs.  They are soft, minimize variance and are good to fill in when you bust something a little bigger.  Just dont feel like you HAVE to play bigger and dont feel like you HAVE to reach your goal of going pro right now.

Also, I dont think you are just getting lucky.  Obv some luck involved, but sounds like you have worked hard, practiced good BR management and are starting to see the fruits of that labor a bit.

Keep it up!!

my advice would be to mix in 1 higher tourney every now and then.

if your standard buyin is around $4 say (i am guessing obv) then maybe once a week mix in a $26 tourney, just to see how you go, whilst keeping the rest of your regular games. that way you can get a bit more experience. nothing says you have to play the maximum games your bankroll allows, especially if you binked a couple of nice scores.

Thanks for all the advice guys.  So far this has been a great support community.

I think I'll just keep up what I'm doing, and not buy into anything larger than the $10 until I win another one.  I'm trying not to get my hopes up, however I'm just hoping I'm well on my way to playing the higher stakes, and being able to make a decent income where over the next few years I'll be able to leave my job.  There is NO WAY, I would be able to replace this money if I lost it.  Puting a couple 100 bucks online is a stretch at this point in my life.  It's been my life long dream to turn pro.  I told my wife I would have 100K set aside for 2 years wage.  Not as much as I make now as an electrician, but a good amount knowing that I'm doing the thing that I've loved for so many years.

I'm very happy to be apart of this new community, and I really hope you guys will see me reach my dream (as far fetched as it may seem).

Thanks for all your support.

I think this is a pretty honest answer, as I feel the same way sometimes.  Humans are not risk adverse neccesarily(note how many big pots we want to play when we are losing in cash sessions) but loss adverse.  So after a big score or two we will nit up and not want to drop any of that back.  It's pretty irrational, but it is poker.  The only way to combat this is to a) only play the games you think you are so +ev in that it is a sin not to play, or b) find a sharkscope graph of a really good MTT player and see how more volume=more money, or c) get backed if you can.

At the moment, since I have a full time job, backing is really not an option for me.  Since I don't get nearly as much volume as I would like, the wins that I do get, I really want to collect 100%.  As I said, my dream is to go pro. I'm not playing poker so I can buy stuff (yes, I am cashing out a bit just to make the wife happy lol) But I play poker just to build my roll higher and higher in hopes to some day to be able to do this for a living.  At that point, when I've got money aside to live off for an extended period of time, I agree being backed would give me far less stress in terms of risk.

At the moment, I'de like to only cash out a few 100 dollars a month to make the happy, and really build this roll to something substantial.  Hopefully with the support of you guys.

But I'm getting way ahead of myself.  I'm sure my chances are slim, but anyways, that's what I'm working towards.

Just play low MTT like 11 dollar etc… Maybe take a shot at 26$ or something. And try to win one of these again and then move up 😉

I have the excact same feeling as you tho

If playing at higher stakes is uncomfortable try playing some satellites to win a high stakes entry.

That way you can play some higher stakes without risking the big $$$.
