I thought I’d start a thread on these Win the Button tournaments that pokerstars have been running recently, as they seema good option for micro/low players like me with their decent guarantess, good structure, and less insane field sizes!
My initial adjustments to this different format have been as follows:
1. Using a larger opening size, to increase the chances of taking the pot down pre-flop. The added value of getting the button when you win the pot then has the effect of widening your range on the next hand, and allows you to have the advantage of position continually to put opponents in difficult spots.
2. 3-bet more often, and light, as stated before, I feel there are immediate and continuing EV benefits the more pots you win, and the more you can put yourself in position.
3. If the person 2 to your right opens, or 1 to your right, I will widen my calling or 3-betting range to decrease my chances of ending up in the small or big blinds. (This is somewhat player dependant, if the player s competent, and capable of realising this adjustment I will try and minimise how exploitive I go).
4. Fundamentally – adjusting my strategy to prioritise winning the pot in close spots. If poker strategy can be summarised by prioritising position, the more you can stay in position the higher your EV!
Obviously it’s important to not sacrifice too much EV with any of these short term adjustments, but what would everyone’s thoughts on these adjustments be?
Any other suggestions on theoretical adjustments to make in this format?

A lot of that makes really good sense – I like the idea of being aggressive versus the players directly to your right to avoid being in the blinds. Very smart.
The only thing I slightly disagree with is going larger preflop on principle – the EV of taking the pot down preflop and being on the button next hand an extra 5-10% of the time might not necessarily be greater than the EV of making the optimal raise sizing for each individual hand. I think at tables where villains are very weak, I would guess keeping your sizing small is optimal in order to take advantage of their postflop weaknesses, but against better villains the EV of actually playing pots against them is likely less than the EV of getting the button slightly more often, so the theory does have some merit at tougher tables.
Really interesting post. Couple of things I hadn’t thought about before – generally I just go into these things aiming to 3-bet a ton and end up punting it off.
Thanks ginger!
I thought it would help me solidify a couple of these ideas by putting them down on paper (virtual paper anyway), and it’s always good for the poker brain to think of how to respond exploititively to different situations!
Your pointers are good, and at the stakes I’m playing I should probably stick to mostly varying my raise sizing based on how much I think it will increase my win rate (I’ve had great results increasing my button raise sizing based on one of your live sweat videos).
I’ve certainly had my fair share of donk offs though when I get myself into some weird position with a much lighter range than I normally would.
If anyone else has any ideas they’d like to add I’d love to hear them :).
