Hi

Do all of you pros have a sponsor, or do you pay the fun yourself?

not a pro by definition, but I am backed and prefer it for a ton of reasons.  It's not for everyone, but I like it.

I am not a pro either, but I recently got a backing offer for MTTs that I ended up not taking.  The volume he wanted was too high, and I didnt really think highly of his game in the form of coaching(even though he has a coaching add on 2+2 for $175 an hour which is pretty rediculous). Being backed by someone like the bigdog though would be great just because he is a great player and a good guy who really understands the grind and the current state of the game.  Remember, when you are backed, most of the time you have to meet a certain amount of volume.  If you play full time, this shouldn't be too hard, but if you are also a student like me or have a job, having a flexible sched. is key.

I reccomend profit-sharing with a reputable coach if you have a roll but want some guidence.  I recently entered into a profit sharing contract for cash games with a CR pro (don't worry, TPE is still my favorite) and honestly it was the best thing I could have done.  I can't stress the importance of some type of coaching.  I went a long time trying to figure stuff out on my own, if I had known how much 1-1 coaching helps I would have done it a long time ago.  That's why I would take advantage of the pros who offering coaching here if you can, and if you can find someone who beats the stakes you play over a large sample size and is willing to do a profit-sharing agreement with you, I would take it.  You don't spend any money unless you win, and it is in the coaches best interest to make you as winning of a player as they can.

Now that being said, if you can find a great player/coach that is willing to stake you and give you some sort of flexability, I would break my right arm trying to sign that contract, then sign it left handed if I had to.  It's really late, and I just played 3-hours straight of cash, so I don't know if this makes a lot of sense or is even relevent, but it is way too long to delete at this point haha.

Some opportunities only come a knocking once…Take the chance if you got it. Also, I agree with the 1-1 coaching, it really does not have to be a coach, just a very knowledgeable friend helps. You can bounce ideas and how each other play, which really helps imo.

TT you do not have to disclose this if you don't want to. But how does 1 get backed by the BigDog? Did you spot you at some tables and like your game? Did BigDog post that he wanted some backees? (I find it hard to believe BD doing this btw).

I am just wondering how a big name in the Online game like Casey finds legitimate people to back.

I think for micro grinders jshilling hit on something that is a really important and critical idea. Investing in yourself is probably the single best thing you can do for your poker playing. For me personally watching the vids and analyzing my play has carried me far, but it wasn't until I started investing in 1-1 coaching and recently started 1-1 coaching work on a regular basis that I feel I am really starting to maximize my learning time with the game. Having someone who has established themselves look over your play, give thoughts and perspectives and highlight areas to work on has allowed me to focus much better on plugging my leaks and allowed me to make measurable strides in improving staying focused on my growth/development. I wouldn't worry as much about finding someone to pay the perverbial poker bills for you, what I would recommend is finding someone to work with that you are comfortable with, you trust, who trusts and believes in your skills/potential and where your poker relationship will be mutually beneficial (both financially and from a long term improvement perspective).

I'm backed as well.  I used to grind the $1-$5 tourneys and gradually got backed by a group that didn't work out and then my current backer asked me if I wanted to be backed and have been with him for two years now and it's been a great relationship.  I really like the freedom of being backed.  It all depends on personal preference though.
