whether to call a shove, or just shove yourself

 Hey guys,

I just joined up and am really digging this site! Great concept for a training site.   One spot in MTT's where I get confused is when a shortstacked opponent goes all in, and I have a strong hand, but not a premo, that figures to be ahead his range.  For example:  Let' say I'm playing a live tourney at my local casino.  We're down to 3 tables, and the average stack is around 20 bb.  I've got 22 bb on the button.  Both the big blind and small blind have me covered.  A seemingly competent player goes all in from the highjack for 4 bbs, and I have pocket 6's.  If I just call here, I'll have to fold to a reshove if one of the blinds has something like AJs, or I may induce a flat call from one of them holding something like Axs.  If I shove,  I'm rarely getting called unless one of the blinds wakes up with a premo.  But is it worth it to shove?  And does this decision change if, say, I'm on the highjack, and the shortstacked shover is in middle position? I hope this example is suitable to illustrate this point. Thanks for your help guys.

Sorry guys, should have put this in the MTT strategy forum. My bad, blame it on me being a guppy.  Thanks again for your help.

its ok, i moved it for you 😀

in the spot you have described, i would be isolating rather than just flatting. even if you get worse hands to shove on you from the blinds, it still means your overall equity in the hand goes down because you have another player to beat. if you are inducing from the blinds, your risk of busto is obviously now a lot higher because they play the pot a lot more often.

reshoving works here because you pick up equity by making the stacks behind you fold.

i think i am rambling now, hope that makes sense

Thank you.  I see how it would be optimal to shove myself with this hand.  Are there any hands that you would flat here with?  or maybe if the original pusher had 6-7bb's?

i really dont see myself flatting ever here. maybe if i had a super strong hand like KK or AA and i was sure that the people behind wouldn't think it was weird that i was flatting then i might do it, but i would say 90% of the time i would be iso shoving – both with my super strong hands and weaker stuff like 66

yeah iso shoving my entire range except AA probably

1 – he has 4bb's

2 – he is in LP

3 – we only have 2 players to go through

If hes a competent player, he almost certainly knows he should be shoving a tonne of hands, even like the 76s, 54s etc

With specifically 66, we cant fold, we cant flat – theres no other way to play it imo

with regard to position – things do of course change the earlier we are. b/c correct open shoving ranges from say UTG with 10bb's are obv tighter than from LP with the same stack and therefore our iso ranges need to be adjusted accordingly.

eg. If this guy shoves 4bbs UTG at a 9 handed table i'm folding 66 here with 22BB's

End game strategy is something thats i think extremely difficult to perfect, so practice is paramount.

I always play a few 18 mans, 45 mans and some steps on the side while im playing MTT's. This keeps my mind fresh in this respect.

Welcome to the site and TPE Nation!!  I agree with the previous posts as well.  I am never flatting here with 22bb.  I am 3 bet jamming to isolate to pick up the chips in the pot.  If you get snapped off in the blinds so be it (unlucky).  You don't want to flat though, have one of the blinds call feeling as if they are priced in, you miss your flop and no you are stuck hoping to get to showdown cheaply.

In contrast if you have say 25-30bb, I am more apt to min 3 bet to isolate but still may be able to get away from a 4 bet jammer from behind.  Best of luck at the tables.
