So this is a general question, but any insight or general rules of thumb would be great.

How big of a stack is optimal to start 3-betting light and for value?  I realize up to 25bb, you are too short stacked for 3-betting, unless you are GII.  I sometimes find myself in the 30-35 bb range and wonder if i'm too short to play more aggressive preflop.

Is 40bb the magic number to be able to 4-bet light against an aggressive 3-better?

thanks.

My standard, although some times I'll deviate based on opponent:

< 25bb – 3 betting light is unlikely unless other factors determine its a good spot

25-30bb – 3 betting light some times, but being careful through the hand as not to get stuck with half my stack in the middle with little equity

30bb+ – 3 betting light

The reason for this is when 3 betting light and called you want to have room to cbet, but I do not want to come out of the hand with < 20bb so that I still have a reshove stack.

Keep in mind though the importance of the villian's stack.  If he has 10bb, he's likely not folding.  If he has 15-20bb theres a chance he's folding.  If he has 20bb+ the likelihood of it getting through is greater againt most opponents.

I don't think there is an optimal stack size bc so much of it depends on your opponent's tendencies and their stack size as well.  However, there is a floor where 3 betting lighting is unprofitable, and I believe that you accurately stated that is 25BB.  Generally, I agree with your assessment that both you AND your opponent must have > 25BB.  The reason for this is that the players who are the most exploited by the light 3 bet are those who are raising too light themselves.  Generally, they will raise to 2.5BB but fold to even a modest size 3 bet of say 6.5 bb.  If you ever raise 1/4 your stack you are basically committed so 3 betting light with less than 25-26BB is bad.  Once you have 26+ BB then it depends a lot more on your opponent's tendencies than your stack size.  30BB is absolutely fine for 3 betting light against an opponent who opens frequently but has a high (>50%) fold to 3 bet tendency.
