Hi TPE forum. My questions is like the title says, when do I want to take coin flips?
I’m currently playing micro / low stakes (1-11$), so I think people are not reshoving as wide as in higher stakes(?)
I have some thoughts, but would love to hear your opinions also.

  • When you are on a tough table compared to your ability
  • Do stack sizes matters? May I want to take a flip for 10bb if I’ve 40bb? Does it change if I have 20bb?
  • Which stages in the MTT should I want to take the flip and when should I not?
  • Any other tips for when to take’em?

I feel this is a leak in my game, and I hope you will share some knowledge with me!

I will personally recommend, that you see the MMTs in 4 stages. Early game, early/middle game, middle, middle/late and late game. Of course you dont want to take flips in the early stages. But when you reach midt game/late game you need to take those coinflips or 56% vs 46%. You need to win these flips to go through and win the tournament. When you reach late game, I will normally play a bit tight again, cause I often see some spots, where I can double with a good hand. The thing is, you need to accumulate a lot of chips for the late game. But if it was so easy, everyone would do it. GL. smile

I actually really like this question. Matt or Andrew will come back with a definitive answer I’m sure.

We all gotta flip right? I wish I’d thought of this question. It is genius in its simplicity. I agree with Basse that it surely won’t be early game, but I’d love to hear a breakdown of the thought process I should be engaging here.

I address this in my Getting Off On the Right Foot series. Short answer is you’re neglecting important information:

1. What kind of odds are you getting?

2. How do you know it’s a flip? (Hint: you don’t)

Sorry Andrew,

I got so much out of that video series, as frankly I do from all your work, but I guess one can’t be expected to retain every detail…in fact I expect 70% or more is lost to the memory over time, (at least from my memory!).

Could you possibly expand a little around point 2 please? If it is too large a topic then if you could remind me in which video to look (if you recall)?

Many thanks.
