So this is just a general question regarding bubble scenarios; they come up constantly on bovada where 18 or 36 or 45 ppl get paid and we have like 7-15bbs. Some obv factors are the players behind having you covered or not etc. but I’ve tried to analyze these spots a couple times; one with the free version of ICMizer and once with HRC. The ICMizer one was a long time ago, but it had me playing very very tight in these spots (lets say pushing like top 7% rather than top 18-20% or so) and HRC was more in the realm of pushing say top 15% rather than top 18-20%. So I guess I’m just curious if anyone has done any actual research on these spots because I would rather not try dicking around on HRC as its pretty time consuming to set up in that software.

Hello Jonmon.

General principles apply on the bubble, depending on whether you are a large, medium or small stack. Obviously ranges are important in high ICM spots, but the dynamic is more so.

Whole books have been written about the bubble in poker tournaments. Kill Everyone is excellent, and is available as an e-book, although you need to have a serious interest in the theory, otherwise you will lose interest. Each spot is situation specific and would need to be analysed individually. Whole video series have been made just about the bubble. There are bubbles in every tournament,  (not just on Bovada!). I could sit here and give you a breakdown of how I approach the bubble, but a) I am only a member not a pro and b) I expect I have some holes in my bubble strategy, so follow my advice to the letter, and you will end up about as successful as me (not very).

Suffice it to say, a reg who knows what he is doing can abuse this spot very profitably, as most people tighten up way too much as they approach the money or final table.

As a member you have access to excellent videos on just this subject. Just run it through the filter.

However, here is a link to an article by Matt Hunt on tpe. If the link is broken just type it in.

Oh, and if you don’t want to read Kill Everyone, if you asked me to sum it up in 4 words, it would be…

“Push wide, call tight”

…in high icm spots.
