Were about midway through a tournament and the table had been very passive/limping..like really bad..Blinds are 75-150 and UTG limps with 1750 chips now down to 1600 after limp.folds to Hero on BTN with 3400 and has 2 black 99’s. The SM Blind and the BB both have me covered with over 8000. I decide to raise to 450 both the SM and BB fold and UTG just calls and he now has 1150.

FLOP is AclubQdiamond4heart UTG checks-Hero? Pot is 1125-I range UTG to have small pkt pairs thru AJ-KQ suited type hands..I put out a small 400 bet and he calls..Turn is a 7diamond UTG checks and Hero checks back..River is 2club UTG goes all in for his last 750 and hero folds..Question is with around 23 BIGS and UTG having like 11 should I have shipped Pre-Flop? was this okay the way I played it etc…Thanks everyone

I’m actually happy to overlimp here. I think shipping 23bb is fine but you only risk 1bb when you limp and utg’s range is mostly pairs and big cards you don’t have much fold equity with his stack.

I like overlimping because if someone makes a raise in the blinds, utg will probably shove and you can overshove ISO.

if you limp behind and it goes 3-way, you get to see a flop with a strong hand and can get away easy if utg gets aggressive.

It certainly is an awkward and interesting spot. It would be helpful if you posted pot size through the hand. Goodness knows what he is open-limping with off a 12 bb stack.

If you raise it can create all kinds of awkwardness…as you discovered, due to the effective stack size. Therefore, I’m probably shoving my 23bb stack from the BTN here. Failing that, as lionhat said, I dont mind limping behind. I’d be hoping for one or both of the blinds to come along, and if one raises, then I’m shoving if UG comes along or not. I can’t fold 99 from the button with 23 bigs.

As played…well if you cbet and he calls, as you did, even if he puts in the rest of his stack I’m calling, however dangerous the board looks.

But if you decide not to turn your 99 into a bluff here, then you are effectively announcing to UTG that you don’t have an ace, therefore he can shove, and then I’m folding…just urrgh.

The more I think about it the more I like lionhat’s limp. Under high ICM I’m shoving over the open limp…too easy to be abused. Under cEV I’m with lionhat.

I was thinking a bigger raise pre flop, trying to induce utg to shove pre, since they are very passive, folding if any resistance happens, from the blinds, calling utg.

Don´t like your cbet on that flop, V is not folding Ax, probably not Q or broadways either, most small pairs or suited conectors you have beat; you are basically called by better or in very good shape hands.

With SPR just above 1 hard to find a fold if I check that flop, may need reads on V; if this V fits into “very passive/limping..like really bad..” then I would fold even if I had checked flop.
