$200 buyin tourney at WSOP circuit in Durant,OK…………..blinds 250/500 ante 50 my stack size is 10600

im utg+1 pair of 5s….i was thinking of folding but my table image was tag…i raised to 1250, folded around to sb and he looks at his cards and shoves 11200, bb folds and i tanked…..this player had just been moved to table and i saw him call raises with k/10 , a/7……….my first read  i put him on was A/k and A/Q……..i tanked and i went with AK and he turned AQ,,,,,,,so there it was 5s vs AQ…….he spikes an A and i get knocked out in 50th of 174….thanks for any input TPE members as its my way to improve…

One thing to remember, against his range you just posted you are flipping at best, 80/20 worst.  I am 50/50 on the open…but as played I prob fold after his jam, assuming I was not steaming and was thinking with a lvl head.

You still have 18BBs behind so you are not committed, and if this guy is as spewy as you say, you can find a better spot.

I dont love the open and I dont hate it either. But you're going to be OOP to anyone that flats and put in tough spots if 3bet or jammed on. You have an awkward stack and an awkward table position. overall i think I prefer folding pre and waiting for a better spot.

As played, regardless of how spewy this player is I doubt he is turning up with 22-44 with his 3bet shove, so at best you are flipping. I fold to the shove. You will still be left with 19ish BBs, which is a perfect resteal stack to shove on your friend there if he is opening loose, and you'll soon have your chips back.

Something I have been working on with my coach is to cut out early position opens with small pocket pairs, its a real stack drain.

I personally will fold pre with your stack and wait for the opportunity to 3 bet shove at a later spot to use my fe to pick up the pot/antes.  With the way played, I am probably folding pre because at best you are flipping.  With a blind 3 betting over your ep open is showing huge strength.  You are right in most cases it will be aq/ak, but that is the BEST scenario.  99 is probably the bottom of my range in getting it in pre.  Again it is player dependent, and your read was right in this case but long term I think it is a leak.  Best of luck at the tables.
