First of all I apologise for the jivaro link but I cannot find anyway to copy hand history from there. If there is a way please let me know.

This hand came up very close to the bubble. I can think of several hands I beat such as pocket pairs and missed flush draws but primarily if he connects with the flop in any way, he beats me. I felt it was unwise to risk my tournament life for such a risk, although I have been looking at it ever since and second guessing myself. Maybe he was just pushing me around with his stack near the bubble and I am being unnecessarily cautious?

I should add I have only just started playing tournaments again after a years break so this decision may be easier than I am making it sound.

Many thanks.

Tricky spot. You’re right that you can only beat a bluff, but that doesn’t necessarily tell you how you should proceed. One thing you haven’t mentioned yet is your pot odds. You don’t need to win even half the time to justify calling. Here’s a good way to approach spots like this: before you fold, ask yourself, “If I don’t call with this, what would I call with?” Likewise, before you call, ask, “If I don’t fold this, what would I fold?” What are some other hands you would play this way up until the river? Where does this hand sit relative to your range?

Thank you that is great advice. I would have definitely called with a better ace – probably A9 or higher,

I would also play pocket pairs like this until the river such as 22 – 99

I am thinking whether I should have bet the turn but I seriously doubt I could get worse hands to call or better to fold. Nevertheless I feel I displayed weakness by checking twice and may have given the impression I had given up on the hand.

Thanks again for a great approach to analysing such a spot.

Isn’t this  just a fold pre? I don’t like a lot raising A2o from UTG and less so flat calling a 3bet out of position. Even when you’re called and hit you’re not going to be sure where you are in the hand. I could see this working form the CO but from UTG??

I think this should have just been a fold pre.

Not sure what you are looking at but I am not UTG. I am in the big blind defending against a min raise from the button

Sorry, that makes more sense. Watching the video I thought somehow you were raising utg an then calling a 3bet.
