I would like to know how everyone else would handle this situation, yes this was from last summer but hey, new member :).

VERY early in the 550 Venetian Deepstack (18k starting chips, we have not even completed an orbit so I have no read on the players).

UTG opens to 300 (3xs BB) something about the way was acting at this point told me he REALLY liked his hand.   I Look down and find 6club7club, perfect hand to go fishin.  I flat and everyone else folds.

Flop comes 567 rainbow, GIN!  He over bets the pot to 1000, and again, the way he was breathing and eyeing me, he LOVED his hand.  Given his actions pre and post flop I put him on big pairs Aces through Queens.  So I tried to send a message and made it 3k.  Apparently this fell of deaf ears, he shoves.

Now what?

call and hold against his aces! I mean you cant ask for much better. Doubt he is opening 89 utg at this stage i mean its possible but unlikely and hes def not cbetting that much with the nuts or a set. Obv overpair imo just call and hold if you lose not much you can do. You are a 70% fav here to win if he has the overpair.

Fist pump Call, if he did that with 89 or 45  not much you can really do, even against 88 with the draw you are still a 61% fav

He probably has a broadway overpair to the board, with the reaction you described preflop about liking his hand.  Only thing that concerns me is that he seems to not notice straight/flush draw on the board, which could mean he is a donk or his hand flopped well. Still I think I call with the preflop read, can't see someone getting excited about 89,45,55*, etc, preflop.

* Bigdog would be excited about pocket 55s

Does anyone think that folding here is a viable option?  This tourney is soooooo deep that we may be able to find multiple spots, take advantage of some bad play down the road and not putting our 180 BBs at risk in one shot?

Folding is a good option as well.

Im not saying its a fold. But why “send a message”
With your raise? If he does have an overpair you are
giving him a chance to fold by raising so much.

There aren’t many turn cards you should feasibly
Be too scared of. That being said…I prefer to pot
Control/keep worse hands in by calling.

MOST players aren’t shipping that much $ in preflop
In the 1st level of a deepstack without a hand that
beats you.

Another tricky thing some players do is overbetting
in these spots to induce raises.

Lastly…besides looking “excited” about his hand….
What intangibles can we garner about this particular
Villian that might clue us into what kinds of plays he is capable of.
young kid with a hoodie? Asian guy? Euro? Old man?

Think in live poker with no reads….profiling can sometimes help

Im not saying there is a right or wrong play here. Im just saying I think its
Bad to automatically assume overpair and put your stack in the middle.

Let me answer these one at a time, remembering I am here to find other ways to look at this hand, not to defend my play.

Why send a message?  Two pair, though strong given the play, is not the nutz.  I would rather take this pot right now and increase my stack by 10-15% and move on to the next hand.  At least that was the thought at the time.

Shipping how much in preflop?  The 3x BB bet preflop?  I did not find this too much and was not alarmed by the opening bet.

As far as the intangibles,  he was an early to mid 40s guy who looked like he was here in vacation with his wife.

Personally, I am a late thirties guy with sunglasses and ear buds.  That said,  I feel giving off an image to this guy in particular was pointless, he was only playing his cards and not me.

OP can fold but why would we want to being a 72% favorite against QQ+. if OPs reads are right. I dont think i could ever pass this up. yes its very early but taking a 72% chance to double up gives me a big edge…and im slappin the dealer a $1 tip if he doesnt counterfit us.
