Hi guys,

Me and my buddy are having a debate about UTG bet sizing. I know I'm right but I can't explain why I'm right so can someone please help.

The hand in question is 99 UTG with antes in play. My mate raises it 5x! His reasoning and I quote: “2.5x doesnt get average hands in late position off the pot”

He also goes onto say “5x utg with 99 i dont want callers”

2.5x is better… but why!?!?!?

Cheers

Just go back and tell him you thought about it more and he's right.

Then register for every tourney he ever plays and hope to sit on his left a lot.

Not sure he'll be playing too many more tourneys……

It depends on blind level ninja. Why commit more to the pot than you need to with a mid pair from EP? Does he want to lose the LP 55 on a 2 6 8 board? Does he want to create a large pot for the LP AA on the same flop?

He needs to ask himself what's his objective, he needs to have a plan and this plan will have many scenarios based on the flop texture. In general 2.5x (assuming we're relatively early in the tourney) will give you enough clues based on players ranges whilst also maximising potential gains and minimising potential losses.

There will always be exceptions based on certain situations but I think the above would be the general take.

tell him he needs to learn to play.  you want to have people calling with worse hands.  you want to keep the same betsizing with all your hands.  this guy is clueless and isn't worth arguing with. tell him to  get harrington on holdem or something.
