The hand is from Unibet Open main event 1000+100€ in Cannes, day one out of three.

Should I have raised flop or turn to protect my hand? And can we hero call the river?

Hero had been playing tag so far and hadn’t been defending BB a whole lot.

Villain is a super agg player with vpip 40-50 (my estimation). I had been sitting with him since the start of the tournament and seen him play hands like 3,4o from late positions. I got the impression that he was trying to win every pot he entered and he had got caught bluffing on a four flush board a few orbits earlier. He was the chipleader at the table and would open raise most pots when folded to him.

The hand:

8 players at the table
Villain has about 100000 in chips, Hero has about 60000
Blinds are at 1000, 500 with a 200 ante

Villain opens from late MP with a raise to 2300, Hero is in the big blind and calls with A4o.

Flop (6200): AJ4r

Hero checks, Villain bets 3300
Hero calls

Turn (12800): 10x

Hero checks, Villain bets 6700
Hero calls

River (26200): Qx

Villain bets 12700

Fold or hero call?

I’d call, it sounds like this guy bluffs too much and I don’t think there’s a lot of Kx he’d play this way. Just because you got an unfortunate run out doesn’t mean you should have done something different on the flop. This guy’s a good candidate to just check-call against and let him bluff it off.

Thanks for the reply, I did call and he had K6 of clubs.. The result confused me to wether I played the hand right or not. But I’m guessing he would have played any hand that completely missed the board the exact same way, which would make it a positive EV call after all.

I think as played, a call is fine.. The result doesn’t matter. From your view of V, he is not going to give up on the pot. Assuming you check-call the flop and attempt to check-raise turn, you are still going to be called with a gut shot and may be even lose more chips if he catches his magic card. I would play the same against an aggro villain.

Yeah, and when he doesn’t have the gut shot or if another card hit the river I’d rather have him bluff on the river than give up the hand on the turn, so it makes sense to check turn.
