I was just reviewing things on my end and I am realizing that UTG is a great way for me to set up a few things going on in a poker tournament. I was testing a few situations at the lower buy ins last night. I know it's an OOP play, but I believe that with my range UTG it sets up for when I get a huge hang UTG that you would never fold, no matter the position. I opened 8,9 suited UTG last night in the $33 10k. I get three bet really light from a pretty aggro reg ( who has played many hands with me ) the flop comes 6d 10d Kc. I check and he comes out with a little less than half pot. I thought now maybe it's AK or something like 9's to J's. I guess I should say it's at 150 / 300 and he has 4k behind and I have about 16k, if the flop doesn't hit me I am obv just folding due to stack sizes, but the more I thought about it pre flop I liked my play in chance to stack him. I am back to the flop now. I three bet him real light and in return he just jams it in my face. I am never folding now where even if he has AK I am still in pretty good shape. I call and turn comes a no care 2 and river is a J of d. I guess I just wanted to say that I have talked to a few players who have said they would never do that. imo poker is changing all the time and you have to sometimes come up with your own style of play to adapt, after the flop came I was like 51% favorite to win the hand.  I think in this situation if your willing to flip to take some chips away then you can also make a few more deeper runs. I also burned up the table and ran up to  45k in the next 15 minutes KK UTG +1 and no one believed me at all. I had a three bet and a four bet jam to call, not going to work all the time I know, but just a few things to keep trying to mix up my game. Someone asked me to post this hand and talk about it just to figure out what was going through my head at the time. Goodluck to Everyone! ( PS. if something doesn't make sense then PM me I am doing a few things and reviewing others at the same time sooooooooo I am not proof reading either )

I completely agree with your thought process about UTG.  I would rather open 89s rather than A10 or KJ UTG.  However I really don't like the way you played this hand and I'll tell you why.  I don't mind the raise UTG but when that guy 3 bets you based on his stack size, you know he is really strong.  I don't like your logic behind his hand range of strictly 99, JJ, and AK.  In fact I think you can narrow it down to QQ+ AQs+ or air if he is really getting greedy.  I'm assuming he started the hand with roughly 20 bb's.  I really think he is folding 99 and jamming 1010 and JJ.  Pretty standard to 3 bet call there with AK.  If he were a lot deeper and had over 10k behind then I definitely call.  It just isn't profitable or worth it when he has only 13ish bb's behind. However after the flop you obviously aren't going anywhere.  Hope this helps.

I know what your saying too JLude. I think if I don't know this guy and know he is capable of three betting the stack there to make it look scary I would fold, but knowing who he is and playing hundreds of hands with him I can say that I have seen this play done by him with allot of Ax suited like A5 – A9s. I know he can always have a hand, but if I don't smash the flop then I get away also. Thankyou

Utg is the new button- agree…

Your open is good…

Your flat to his 3bet is really bad (you know i love you) haha

Your reasoning behind smashing a flop and stacking him does not make sense if he only has 18 bbs to “stack”.

Even if he is an active aggro player, his 3 bet range preflop from <20 bbs is just destroying you 90% of the time here.

I wouldn't suggest flatting here unless he had approx 40+bbs behind.

Like your creative thoughts with the light ep opens tho. Use it to set up your image and balance your ranges. It will also make you a better post flop player playing oop more.

Oh and I would play your hand in this order:

1. Fold

2. 4bet jam if you have tons of info on him and a solid read and think you have fold equity

3. flat (never)

Danny lol I like the ( you know I love you ) before berating me, so now I learned something.. I honestly just thought with  light 3 bet what does another blah blah amount of chips do when I am that deep. I didn't think it was horrible, just not something I do all the time.. I guess I was feeling good about something. I had more of the mindset of.. if I flat and get there then I am good and if I dont its a few chips gone.. I do take chances like this once or twice in tourney flatting to three bets…. maybe its's horrible lol and thanks to DannyN I know it is now. I wouldn't do this play in a turbo sir.. just bc I had the chips isn't a good enouogh excuse?

Interesting thread, I've got to agree with the others. although i know you are a beast n your a sicko I'd never do this. Then again I'd also never snap call DevilsWork's 20bb jam with a6off no matter how many chips i had him quadded by. SICKO…lol…I reviewed 6 tourney wins the other night and found one common denominator out of all of them. I raised ep1 or ep2 more then any other spot. Thought it was pretty interesting, that I raised more from early then the co and button. I averaged (29) of 93..I find its much easier to steal ep then it is late now a days. Just have to be careful because good players will catch on. GL!

Pretty sick!!

So in order to practice our postflop game, we should be playing as many hands as possible OOP?  Gotcha.
