    First, I would have bet  the turn or in your case raised it. checking on the flop was ok because the other players had position on you and you want them to act first.  I would  3x  his original turn bet, this might have also gotten the villian out of the hand as well, or if he did call or shove then you know he probably has a queen or an ace.  It is hard to say what to do on the river without raising the turn, he could have made a flush or boat if he had QA or just air. Even if he had one queen you run into a kicker problem, as it was played I would probably fold. Any time a flush or straight draw are out there you want to bet or raise, make them pay for that extra card.
