I have a general strategy question as I seem to be struggling a little with my 3betting. I am trying to increase my aggression level and play a more pressure oriented style, which involves more 3betting. Early in a tourney (pre-antes) I am primarily 3betting for value with a typical range of 99+ AJ+ (may be too loose for where I play, I'd love to hear thoughts on 3betting range for value). Where I am getting bogged down a bit is where does the resteal transition start and what range are we doing it with. As a follow up to the last part, does range not particulary matter when in resteal mode and are we just looking for what we perceive as steals (late position opens, loose passive player opens)? Curious on what others think.
I think it's all about finding the right 'spot' and having ALL the factors line up in a way where the resteal makes the most sence. Alot of restealing is read/feel/image based.
If you watch alot of Pandas or Hagbards videos (or any TPE pro for that matter), when they resteal they do with hands that usually have some sort of equity though.
IMO the restealing usually comes into play in the middle to late stages of an MTT when the stacks are bigger and there is more pressure to apply. My early stage play is very straightforward ABC type poker and I'm 'restealing' with monster hands for value usually.
It's sort of rare to see a TPE pro 3-bet super light with a hand that absolutly has NO equity post flop such as like 2-9off. I think that when I am deciding who I want to 3-bet my hand does factor into the decision somewhat, but not very much as we are just trying to pick good spots and the whole goal of restealing is to, ideally, win the hand WITHOUT showdown.
On the off chance you DO get called it would be nice to have a hand that has some sort of chance to win (J9s,810o,57s) etc but I guess in theory, if you find a good spot to resteal then it's a good spot regardless of your holdings.
Perhaps this should be posted in the 'Ask the Pros' section as i'm sure they will see it there and chime in with their excellent advice.
Graet question though. I would love to know what the Pros have to say about this.

I see nothing wrong with widening your 3 betting range pre-antes to include some suited connector stuff and other hands once you have developed a read that players will either fold pre or flat and fold to c-bets. It's something I do a lot to chip up with ease in the beginning and there's the upside of stacking someone who gets cute and flats big and then you smash the flop with a sneaky hand.
It also gives you a certain table image so that your 3 bets with strong hands get paid a lot earlier than they usually will.
As for when to switch from value to re-stealing? Probably like 20 bb's with antes… maybe a little bit less.
I think range matters when you know there is a liklihood of being called, obviously. If someone has folded 100% to 3 bets then you can almost do it with ATC. And if you have a tight image you can certainly go with ATC.
It's your image combined with their propensity for being call stations that makes range factor into the equation.
I feel like I've answered nothing… lol. But this is a lot of words so F it. I'm clicking the post button.
