Hello!

I was reviweing some hands from almost two years that I discuss with a coach and I was curious to what other people think. I am typing the full hands here, if there is some mistake I apologise.

200/800/1600
UTG (148316) maniac
HJ Hero (87518)
BTN (104463)
BB (152217)

Pre flop: Hero is on HJ with KheartJspade
UTG raises to 3200, 02folds, Hero call, 01 fold, BTN calls, SB folds, BB calls.

Flop TheartKclubTspade (pot 15200, 4 players)
SB checks, UTG (145116) raises 15200, hero? There was a small discussion to call or fold here, thoughts? hero call, 2 folds.

Turn 8spade (pot 45600, 2 players)

UTG (129916) raises 45600, hero?

I think a lot of this depends on game flow.  You’re 4 handed against a maniac with top pair. I think I like jamming the flop, but as played I think I jam the turn. If he has a ten or a better k, gg, well played sir.

So it’s actually an 8-handed table, but a 4-way pot, correct?

I think I would personally fold preflop against a UTG open, even if it’s a maniac. KJo is really not a fantastic hand to be flatting EP opens from the HJ, with more people to act behind you. Against maniacs I’d prefer to tighten my preflop ranges and not let them pull me into their game of playing big pots with marginal hands. With hands like KJo, you will really need to trust your hand reading skills which will be tough against maniacs with undefinable / very wide ranges. Playing stronger ranges against aggressive & loose players enables you to not be so affected by possible post-flop errors you might make. It also seems that you are pretty deep in the tournament based on those chip counts, which means ICM plays an even bigger factor here, which makes KJo an even worse candidate for playing in this spot.

As played, I think calling the flop is the only option here. You still have 2 people to act behind you (BTN, BB). You also give the maniac some rope to keep bluffing. I think the turn is also just a call, despite the flush draw coming. A maniac is not folding any flushdraws or straightdraws to your jam anyway (you also have a relevant blocker to those, which polarizes his range even more to either Tx or complete air), and you don’t want to fold out his complete air. So I think the line of simply calling down all 3 streets is optimal here against this particular opponent.

Preflop is thin but okay. Flop call is fine (absolutely hate jamming flop FWIW, just to address the suggestion – you block worse hands calling you, you fold out all bluffs, and are virtually dead versus Tx), but the turn is the interesting part.

One key factor here is you block villain’s most likely bluffs – QJ, J9, AJ, and spades. I think this might actually make it a fold on the turn, since this line looks a lot stronger, even coming from a maniac. You have plenty of stronger hands in your range to not fold here anyway – you can obviously get it in with T9/JT/QT combos, and since this is around the middle of your range and you’re facing a massive bet, I think folding is okay. Get him next time.
