Live $400 buy in I don't know villain, but one guy who is always at my table seems to know him, so he may be a tournament regular. Mid-20s hispanic guy. Effective stacks 15K out of starting stack 12K. Hero has chipped up without showing a hand.

Blinds 75/150 Villian raises 500, hero calls bb with 8heart8club

Flop 7club6heart3club both check

Turn (1075) 6diamond I check / call 750

River (2575) 7spade I check, villain bets 2000.

Pre-flop raise size is slightly larger than table average. It seems strange villain would check back a value hand on a wet flop, but I also don't know how likely he would bluff river with A high hands since there are more 7s and 6s in my range than his. The best candidates for bluffing hands from villain are counterfeited lower pairs and missed flush draws without an ace, but there aren't many combos of those and many would bet flop.

Would be somewhat helpful to know Villain's position. Turn seems like a very clear bet.

Instead of trying to guess whether or not he's bluffing here, I'd encourage you to think in terms of building a bluff-catching range. Consider all the hands you'd play this way up to and including the river check. When you aren't able to guess whether V is bluffing, you should call some of them and fold others. So the real question to ask is whether 88 is a better for folding or calling. Put another way, if you folded this hand, what would you call/raise and why?

villian is risking 2k to win 2575 , so he needs you to fold 43% of the time and for you to make them indifferent to bluffing you should be calling 57% of the the time.

I agree with bet turn , river is a call imo.
