Villian was fairly active (38/7 over 71 hands) and frequently defended his blind.  We were 4 away from the money.  A5o on the button was a clear open in my books but with <20BBs on the bubble, against a big stack, should've I just shoved pre? or folded and waited for a better spot?

I think the answer is in your post.. this guys the big stack and is defending his BB a lot meaning we're almost certainly going to be playing post flop with <15bbs.. not to mention sometimes being faced with the decision to CALL all in holding A5o.. neither of these are nice spots at all

I'd prefer to just stick it in pre.. open folding this hand on the BTN seems just yuck

4 of the 5 players have a minimum of 3x the hero's stack, the bullseye in on your back, only move is to shove. Your time has run out

You either have to shove or fold here.  More and likely he will call given his stack size to yours, so the advantage is to him if you get into a preflop battle, better to put the pressure on from the beginning, then to doubt your play later.

Definite FOLD.  As you said BB was actively defending his BB and he was the big stack and much more likely to call. I dnt like an open shove of 17BB here with A5 on the bubble.

1 tenth of your stack will be gone in the next orbit if blinds go up within it would be more.  I am ok folding here and waiting for a better spot.  On the other hand if he is likely to defend to your push now he will be more likely to defend a smaller push next orbit with less.  I believe I would have shoved this pre and let the chips land where they man.  Raising puts you in an akward spot even if you hit your A you have to guess when he bets which he probably will.

Shove. Don't understand the arguements against shoving here at all. People tighten up on the bubble to make the money therefore they are not calling you light. If one of them wakes up with better than a5 its a cooler. Uber nitty to be folding here. Don't like opening the button here pre tho. High variance play, especially if he is frequently defending. As played just call the river. If he has hearts its all you can do.
