Of all the things I've learned on TPE, the concept that surprised me the most is the bluff on the river when you missed, as well as calling with your bluff catcher because your opponent made the same move.

Are there any videos that discuss this concept in detail? I'm trying to understand the types of table, board, and betting dynamics that make this angle better/worse. For example, does the flop need a 2 flush? What if the board is paired? What if the bet is a shove vs. an overbet of the pot with chips behind vs. a half-pot bet?

This seems like an easy tool to add to the arsenal (as well as when I'm looking for reasons to call on the river with top pair), but it can also be a one-way ticket to increasing variance in -EV fashion as well. Thanks, all.

P.S. Does this work in cash games too?

Its not necessary to turn all missed draws into a bluff on the river. If you bluff all draws that you miss on a lot of boards you will actually be bluffing too much. Generally draws are your best candidates to turn into a bluff but there are a myriad of factors to consider including showdown value, blockers to villains value range, how this bluff candidate falls into our range on a particular board etc

To understand the types of boards, table and villains to make these plays on you will need to investigate yourself on a host of boards, against different positions and villains. Both Andrew Brokos' range construction, bluffing and evaluating bluffing series will help you in your endeavour.

Thanks, Kalc, all good stuff that saved me a lot of time on my response!

I might actually suggest starting with my Hand Reading series before moving on these others.

The bottom line is that you shouldn't really think of this as some sort of special “play”. Your ability to bluff is determined by either your read on how your opponent will respond, if you have one, or if you don't on your own value range. In situations where there are lots of hands you could bet for value, you should also bluff more. In situations where you could only ever have a missed draw, you shouldn't try to bluff without a read to justify it. Of course, it's better not to end up in those latter situations in the first place.

Your opponents make that mistake often, though. They call with draws in situations where they would have raised with strong made hands, and then on the river they try to represent that strong made hand. The key to exploiting this tendency is learning to recognize situations where they can't (or at least probably won't) have the strong hand they are representing but could easily have a missed draw.

That makes sense. It matters where to look when determining whether to make this play, and it seems I wasn't going to be looking at the right criteria to make an informed decision. I think I know which TPEU elective I'm going to watch next.
