I live in Florida and no online poker except a couple months a year on ClubWPT, so alas I can only play in live tournaments. I’ve read 4 of Harrington’s on poker series, The Little Green, Blue, And Black books, Am in the Middle of Mr. Brunson’s really thick book.

Besides the fact that there are no physical tells of any kind online (except bet sizing) as there is live, are there any other differences in strategy that I should be aware of as I go through the University videos? None of the books mention anything in detail, nor can I find much online.

Constructive feedback will be very appreciated!

Thank you all in advance,

Ray

Well Maybe I can narrow it down for my fellow TPE friends and put down the differences I do know. Since most of you are online players I’ll state what I’ve noticed about live that I am aware of, I haven’t played online since it was banned in Florida so here it goes…..

1. A live MTT can be a single day event or multiple day event

     A. Multiple day events have 3 different formats,

           1. Numerous day 1’s, if it is a 6 day event with 5 starting days it will have Day 1A – Day 1E

with the conclusion on day 2

           2. Numerous days, Like the WSOP main event, very large opening field of players,

               played until the final table.

           3. Numerous day 1’s and then day2, day3, day4 until a final table is reached and

               then the final day

2. Dig in and get ready for a long arduous journey.

    A. Even the single day tournaments can last a long time. At a local Casino, there

        is a $120 buy-in, 10K Guarantee that attracts 120 (180 in season I do live in Florida)

and it starts at 12 noon and lasts till about 7PM.

3. Live poker is the limp capitol of poker, I can’t tell you how many times I raked a sizable

pot on the BB because I raised when the entire table limped.laugh

4. I play a wider range of hands live.

5. Physical tells in the form of facial, body and hand as well as betting patternsembarassed

Position is always important regardless of where the tournament is held.

Ya can’t punch the opponent but ya can punch a screen, Not that I did that, came close a couple times when I first started and before I learned it was’t them but me that F’ed up.surprised

Hello Ray,

I have taken it as my duty to answer posts which have no reply…

even though I can’t answer because I have absolutely no ? idea. I have never played live.

But you can help me! What is a day 1a? I toyed with the idea of playing some event at the Hippodrome in London but I didn’t understand whether I needed to play 1a or 1b or both…

So I ended up not playing any!

How does it work?

We can also talk about Florida. When I was a bit younger I took my pilots license there…at Ormond Beach. I partied at Bike ? Week in Daytona, flew over Lake Occeechobee or however you say it and lunched in St Augustine. I visited ahhh! I forget all the names.

I love Florida!

BTW don’t get frustrated if nobody replies…sometimes it takes a few days.

Pleased to meet you!

Also, to my eternal shame, as I sit in my corner where I have my setup, to the right of my head is a freakin hole in the wall…about the size of my first. Which is not so surprising, considering my fist made that hole. I could cover it up with…hmm…? A Nash ? chart would be appropriate I feel? But I choose to leave the ugly thing there to remind me of my temper.

It wasn’t just the beat I took at the table. It was the beat I took combined with my wife taking that precise moment to start giving me Hell about some tiny thing I did probably 3 months previously which had just popped back into her head.

It has happened before now where I have returned home from work in a positive happy mood only to find myself locked out the house due to a mis-deed from weeks previously which my wife had just remembered that day.

I was almost beaten up in Orlando. By some dude who although in his sixties looked like one tough dude.

I sensed hostility, and when I tried to offer peace over a game of pool he told me to “fu*k off!”, and that I was a “slick English motherfu**er!”

I left.

Riceman,

I to have a reminder of my temper, I carry it everywhere as it is a boxers fracture. After that I started taking Tai Chi Classes which improved my anger management issues not to mention my flexibility and health.

The Tournament structure of multiple day 1’s is as follows:

You can play in any of the day 1’s

If you get knocked out you can re-buy in the next day 1, or the next so on

If you don’t get knocked out, you have a choice to make

  • if you don’t think you have a proper stack to continue on to day 2 then you can forfeit your stack and then play in another day 1, however if you fail to remain with chips in any of the other day 1’s you don’t go to day 2
  • or you just go to day 2

This is the structure I’ve encountered in both the WSOP and WPT live Tournaments.

Thank you for the reply. I am more than happy to give any info on live games I have, I am no Pro….not yet!

If you’re exclusively a live player, I’d recommend spending a lot of time focused on short stack work for two reasons:

1. Lots of random daily MTTs all over the world have bad structures and get short pretty quickly, and you’ll be way better at those games by doing so.

2. Everyone in live games plays terribly at short stacks, because live fish haven’t put in the hours online to get comfortable playing at 10-15bb. There’s a massive edge there.

Get yourself a copy of HoldemResources Calculator and start running theoretical scenarios, it’s one of the best tools you could use.

On top of that, I recommend Zach Elwood’s books and videos on ‘Reading Poker Tells’ – they’re incredibly useful and will probably jump your live winrate up quite a bit in the short term. Even a basic familiarity with the most common live tells in low stakes players can give you a huge edge.

Thank you for the information, theGinger45 am purchasing the book through Amazon, and just downloaded the calc.

Should be through with the first TPE university coarse 1 by end of week. It is very good to go back over stuff I have read in my books.

Just reading articles online and in mags, I have improved my short stack game in the past month tremendously. Still trying to figure out all my leaks.

Sorry Ray,

I still am not sure I understand about live tourneys.

So these are effectively re-buys?
