Hello TPE,
i am new here and i am looking to improve my game quickly by studying the right way.
My question is: “What study habits / actions will improve my game the quickest?” Since i only have about an hour a day
to invest into studying Poker, how should i spend my time studying?
Should I:
– watch videos
– review HH
– read books
– all of the above?
So essentially i am asking that out of all the ways we can study Poker, which one give us the best ROI or bang for the buck?
Thank you for your help!
One thing I would reccomend is watching videos with a pen and paper, and some of the other resources like a database tracker and equity calculator, and pausing everytime there’s a decision to think what you would do, then comparing it to what the pro does. Focus mostly on videos from the last couple years, as poker has moved on a lot.
An exception to this timing is the general theory videos, and I would highly reccomend starting with Andrew Brokos series on both value targeting and bluffing, as well as general concepts as this gets you thinking about the game the right way, and will immediately improve your ROI.
I would only use books if you are unable to use any other method of studying while reading them, as the information can often be considered out of date before the books even published.

There is no one answer to this question. Everyone is different. Take this quiz to find out which learning style works best for you:
Then build a study plan around the most effective learning tools for you personally.
In addition, focus on studying topics that will actually help you in-game – it makes no sense to study deep stacked play if you’re a SNG grinder, and in fact it makes very little sense to study deep stacked play if your short stacked game is weak, since you’ll play far more hands at 0-30bb than you will at 60bb+.
Play to your learning strengths, and study things that will help you in the games that you play. And don’t study too much at once – your brain can’t learn everything in a week.

Totally agree with Ginger and everyone. Depending on where your skills are at now, don’t be in a rush. If you think by watching ONE vid or reading ONE book you are going to crush, that’s just not reality.
Short story, I began my poker journey in 2006 playing the WSOPC in Atlantic City at Harrahs where I was lucky enough to play a SitNgo with talkative guy from Toronto who had online PRO best friend named BigDog (I wasn’t playing online yet). His name was Tim Kelly aka TTwist. This was years before TPE was even thought of. Tim and I became good friends and I met Casey aka BigDog. Then a few years later, TPE started. It wasn’t until 2010 that I started cashing or winning at poker. I was a fish in every sense. Just thought I was better then I was. LOTS of losing poker makes you think and rethink things. With the help of TPE and one of their PROS Lee Childs (great friend) I finally “Got IT”. It takes time. You have to understand that you can’t just watch an Andrew B vid or watch BigDog on twitch and think you’re going play exactly like them and go win the Main Event.
I will NEVER be a poker pro. I’m a poker reg who grinds like crazy, but over the years I’ve learned how to be a WINNING poker player or sorts, lol. It takes a LOT of commitment in how you prepare and play. If you are not trying to improve your game everyday, you WILL NOT win. Daniel Negranu says it on his podcasts.
I would say, study whatever you get your hands on. Your style may not be Andrew’s or BigDogs or Mike Leah or MarcAZN or Killingbird, but STEAL / take things from everyone and make it into your own. Just continue to watch and learn different things from everyone, not one person is absolutely right with everything in poker. Oh and last but not least. Try to RUN GOOD like Jason Mercier and Joe McKeehan. Those two run better at poker then anyone I’ve every seen in my life. lol
I wish you luck sir. And just like Cory “Binks” Waaland said today on Twitter. Enjoy the game and have fun with the players at your table. Remember that bad players play this game and we want to keep them coming back. DON”T TAP ON THE FISH TANK !!! lol
