Live $60 buyin, 65 plyrs, 20 left, pays top 10.
Blinds 1k/2k, 200 ante.
Folds around to Hero on B
Hero (27k) Raises to 5k with 2c 2s.
SB (70k) Flats, BB folds.
Flop Ad Tc 3h
SB checks, Hero bets 5k, SB calls.
Turn: 7c
SB checks, Hero checks.
River: Ac
SB Bets 5k, Hero ????
My reads were that the blinds were super tight, and I needed to start getting some chips in my stack before I got too low. I really didn't see SB or BB calling light all tourney, and I pretty much put him on an A after he check-called my flop bet. I really figured he would fold to the cbet without an A as well..I vowed not to put another cent into the pot after that, but then rivered the nut low flush and he tossed in 5k almost like he felt he had to since he had trip A's.. So if I'm assuming he has an A and the Ac is out, he only has 1 card left that could be a club of course. Im getting like 6-1 but I'm also pissing away a short stack in a pretty lame way. Should I just have shoved 22 on B w 15bbs? Called the 5k? Maybe I should just be folding 22, I hate it.. Feel free to speak your minds, I need the help thx-

My thoughts here is that the villain had a reasonable enough hand to float the flop with like K8 through KQ, Q9 through QJ, J10, and straight draw but he most likely missed the A because he would probably 3bet a strong ace hand preflop and fold a weak one like A3-A8 because he’s out of position. I think if there’s ever a spot to win this hand you need to 2barrel that turn because you can rep the flush or any ace or ten since you were the preflop aggressor. By checking there you showed him weakness which he might be trying to exploit with a small river bet basically saying I might have the best hand here but I’m not willing to throw too much money at it. By checking the turn I think you just can’t make a call on this river. My feel is that he would have folded the turn if he doesn’t have the flush or an A, and possibly floated again with a pair of tens. Given the way the turn was played I think you become too weak on the river despite hitting a flush because it’s the lowest flush possible so you’re beat by so many hands now. I think he just checks the river if he was really afraid of the 4th club. Interesting spot.

Shove pre-flop. This hand plays very poorly when called (as here, where you find yourself bluffing with a hand that is drawing practically dead when called) and you'll be committed to call a shove anyway, so better not to induce from overcards that will fold to your shove but may shove or call if you raise smaller.
Also, ” I needed to start getting some chips in my stack before I got too low,” is not a reason to raise. You can't just add chips to your stack whenever you want them. All you can do is take +EV spots when they present themselves.

Thanks guys. Yes just shove pre I kinda thought that. I wasn't really raising the 22 based on any equity, just kind of a lame steal attempt because I knew they were so tight, coulda been ATC but I got caught up continuing..lets be honest, I don't know what I was doing. I just wasn't sure if shoving 16BB from B w/22 was +EV. But inducing bad hands to call is def. -EV ww 22 I realize. Actually in hindsight 22 isnt too bad against their calling range so def. a shove.
As for me “needing to get chips in my stack before it starts getting low”..point taken. Leads me to a bigger question: I have had in the past, a problem with blinding away. Currently I seem to have a problem with getting inside the bubble frequently but always with a short stack. Granted I am no expert at identifying +EV spots, but what to you do when none are presenting themselves and your stack is blinding away? I'm now so worried about blinding away, I just make weird/bad plays like this. I just play so badly with that 15-20BB stack size really. I'm checking TPE vids and working on it.. If anyone knows any vids or resources specifically to help with this stack size give a heads up.
thx much!

If you're “no expert at identifying +EV spots”, and you're having a problem with blinding away, then you've answered your own question. I'd recommend doing some studying of short stack play, getting yourself a copy of HoldemResources Calculator and running some calculations on the kinds of spots that are giving you trouble. You'll find your ability to spot +EV situations improves rapidly. If you want a good place to start, I recently made a video series on shortstack play using HRC that should give you a good grounding in the key concepts.
