Played in my first live tournament (a daily) yesterday in close to two years, and despite the field being half young “pros”, was really surprised by the shove stacks. It was really low, under 10 bigs, at most (until I busted, at least).
Is that pretty standard? I was expecting it to move a lot faster once the blinds moved up so quickly in a daily with not the best structure, but it was really tight in that particular regard.

Thanks!

Yea live tournments structures are usually worse than online, because its 3x slower they need a quicker structure for dailys. If you want a normal structure you will need to play in the major 2+ day events. they run more like standard speed.

I noticed when i went to macau you need to sharpen your short stack strategy/shove ranges especially for daily sats. which surprised me, luckily tho my favourite structure is hypers.

I also played in the red dragon and acoop which was my first 2 day event. I always hear live is softer than online, but players in macau where alot stronger than i thought and it felt like it took me a week or two to adjust to live.

Im going to pokerstars festival manilla next month. from what i remember it was alot softer than macau also lower stakes and free alchol lol.

Ive learned my lesson, say no to free alcohol lol or you will end up making mistakes on the final table and hating yourself all week.

I also need to train my fish wife how to play better before next month, I am going to let her play turbo or hyper sit and gos $0.50 and practice her shove ranges and icm and short handed. And then try to get her to play super tight early stages. its hard she is the biggest station lol.laugh

This can be a function of average stacks as well. Some tournies play deeper and you may not be able to blind to 4-6bbs because your fold equity is lost, while in others if you double up 6bbs you can move to average stack.  Along w having a good amount of fold equity.  So it’s really tournament dependent.

The short version here is that everyone is terrible in low stakes live poker. Nobody has any idea about shoving ranges or Nash equlibria, because they simply haven’t studied the game at all. Most live low-stakes events have awful structures and you’ll end up playing 8bb pre-ante poker at some points.

I definitely recommend sticking to online games until you have the bankroll to be able to play live stakes that actually allow you to realize your edge. When you’re incredibly short-stacked playing 20-minute levels, the fact that you’re probably a much better player than everyone else simply doesn’t help you that much. You can’t ever play a big enough sample of those games to have much of a shot at making money.

Also worth noting that rake in low-stakes live games is also insanely high, making it even harder to make money. Some terrible rake+structure combos are most likely literally unbeatable in the long run.
