Hi TPE,

I just wanted to get your views on something I am doing at the moment. I have recently noticed that a weak part of my game is ranging my oponents and apart from playing I have been thinking of ways to learn. I have found that just opening up a random tournament table and watching the play has helped me to focus on ranging the players at the table without having to worry about playing my own cards. I know you might think “you might as well be in the tourney,” but I benefit from several things. I am not hindered by the time clock, I can replay any hands and not have to worry about being interrupted by my hands, I can do this for a short period and not have to set aside hours for a full session and I can fire up any table in any tournament at any stage for any stake.

It might sound simple and I have only being doing it for a short time but I wanted to know what your thoughts are on the idea if you have any.

seems legit, although something i might suggest being more effective is to review a tournament of your own using either PT HM or universal replayer, range opponents on each street, and if you want you can take it further and open pokerstove and start estimating your equity v different ranges and see how optimally you are playing based on those ranges.

Not a bad idea, but the unfortunate thing is that you don't see the hand they had at the end, so you could be doing it all wrong. I suggest experience and HH reviews/vids to learn to range.

Thanks for the advice. I have poker tracker but I find that the replayer is awful! If I am using poker stove for equity purposes am I adjusting my oponents ranges every street? I assumed poker stove was mostly used for push fold equity or have I get that wrong?

Stove is also useful to run through a bunch of preflop starting ranges so that you get a good idea of equity of certain hands against others pre and psot flop.

I like the idea of watching how other  people are playing live without being involved. You could also expand that to railling other TPE players for example. You could also reduce the number of tables you play at the same time to allow you to 'watch' the action your not involved with at your tables and make notes ingame of the players at your table.
