I felt like Villian had something like AK/AQ, so decided to turn my top pair into bluff. I felt like the way I played the hand, I could represent flush or maybe even 78. I don’t usually try this type of thing and don’t have much practice with these types of moves. Without knowing results of the hand, let me know your thoughts on how I played it throughout. Thanks!

I think this is where the problem lies. That’s far too narrow of a read to make, and if it were really true, then you should fold turn. Basically your hand has too much show down value to bet as a bluff. Considering how much value there should be in checking this, V would have to fold REALLY often to make bettering preferable.

I fold it pre, as you said “competent player” and open raise from utg, you will be dominated very often with A7o.

Seems like ur way ahead/way behind right? I would check and expect them to give up a lot.

Well, that’s pretty much always the case on the river 😉

Heh.

I agree about folding pre because of where the raise came from. You block being dominated, but then that increases the chance you have only 1 overcard. The only hand you can expect to be ahead of is probably KQ.

Ask yourself this: What kind of flop would make you feel comfortable, especially when being OOP? A cutoff or button raise would have been a different story.

if you want to turn it into a bluff then i would argue for a c/shove on river. your blocking your blocking some flushes, straight and top set.

but not sure if enough FEQ.

Default fold pre

Lmao that’s true 😀 I was pretty baked and probably just a confused fish haha.

How likely do ppl think villian is to fold better hands like the AK/AQ examples?

I was thinking they just call?

I always in the past would have folded this no question.

Now all I hear everywhere is “but you are getting such a good price from the BB to call, with almost ATC”.

I cannot tell you how much $ I have been throwing away recently when I complete from BB, hit TP medium kicker, call off a street, then have to fold…for example.

I know about “R” as explained in Foucault’s videos. Maybe I am just implementing the strategy wrongly?

Maybe we will all revert to opening 3xpre, just because it is so popular to defend the BB so often now. And really, as experienced poker players, surely everybody always saw the odds being offered to the BB from a 2x open pre? I just wonder how it has suddenly become such a “eureka!” moment.

As far as this hand is concerned, I feel the top pair has too much showdown value to be turning into a bluff, like Andrew said.
