Hey everyone, i just won a 2$ rebuy satellite to the sunday million, this will be the biggest buy in tourney that i have ever played. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips/info on how to approach it and the major differences in play between a 200$ buy in and micro stakes. Just about anything will help

Thx,

Cmounky

Play solid ABC poker and stick with a TAG approach when you decide to mix it up. The field is going to be much harder and more experienced than what you are use to, but you have the best resource available to you-TPE. Come by chat on Sunday and let us know how things are going.  GLGL

I would say 95% of the people in this tournament have satellited in tournaments like yours, and the play will be indicative of that.  Don't let the buyin alter your decision making – just get value from hands you should and you'll accumulate just like you would in your normal $10 tournament.

i was unaware that i could take the 215 T$ instead of playing in the sunday million, would you guys advise this, considering 215 is bigger than what i currently have in my stars account? and maybe take a smaller “shot” like a 30 or 50 $ tourney? what do yall think?

Yeah if 215 is a significant proportion of your br, you should be taking the 215 T$.

Take the T$.  You are gong to be faced with decisions for your tournament life early and often and you are going to be scared money.  its just a huge disadvantage.  Ive been there.  unless you are willing to play aggresively you are going to end up nitting it up and playing preflop poker.  Ask yoursefl if you comfortably are going to put all your chips in preflop with AQ or JJ. if not, I just wouldn't play it.  keep at it and you'll get your chance when it means less than 50% of your bankroll.

I am a micro grinder as well, even though it is temping to play, I would take the money if it would be >20% of your current total roll. You could always try the Sunday 1/4 million which is $10, I believe and I think they have a Sunday 1/2 million as well, you could do both of those for less than $50.

I’m also a micro player $3~ ABI. I won satellite to the Sunday 5 mil two weeks back. The reasons I ended up playing it were –

I had played the Sunday mil before so I had experience,
my bankroll is over $1k,
running hot in that particular tourney coulda meant life changing money (1mil GTD for winner),
I was confident I could find good spots to chip up against that field,
I wasn’t scared of losing the $215 so it wouldn’t affect my play,
Losing it on a cooler wasn’t gonna make me ‘hate life’ (as Bigdog puts it)
I had watched bigdog vids all day….

if these don’t apply to you then take the money. But I would reward yourself by taking a few shots at big tourneys like praetor said. The Sunday 1/4 mil is a good start. $11 buy in and a decently soft field/decent payout. Playing a big buy in tourney I would advise playing as few tables as possible (or just 1) so you can focus on the players at the table, pickup their tendencies/patterns and exploit them.

Next week the 1/4 mil is changing to the Sunday storm and it’s 1 mil GTD
…..day-storm/

I would also look at some of the SCOOP events and choose some that you like the look of. There are some decent $22 events there that I’m currently playing satellites for.
…..com/scoop/

A decent win is great, but there’s nothing like playing for BIG money

If you do play it the main difference will be – people for the most part will be paying attention to how you play.

In my regular tourneys I can fold for 30 straight hands. Then when I do decide to raise I’ll get flatted, 3bet AND c/called. You probably won’t see this in the mil.

Taking this into account I think it’s important to be able to switch gears. Opening light for a period then tightening up one people adjust to you.

Generally I found people are much better preflop. Rarely limping, not so much flatting and folding to 3bets OOP. This will apply more later in the tourney once most of the dead money has departed.

I would open a few pots early just to see how people react to you, see if your table is crazy against you or not. Obviously tighten up if your getting played back at. Taking down a couple of pots will make you more confident if you suffer from nerves. This will help you not fall in love with your QQ when you finally pick up a hand but have to fold for whatever reason.

Early – My approach was opening 2 pots per orbit when we were super deep then adjust to what the table were doing.

Midstates – looking for more spots to 3bet light on people opening wide to stay afloat if I was card dead. Not overdoing it since they will fold once or twice then adjust.

Later on when shallower – just applying a solid push/fold game.

Hope that helps. The main point for me is the preflop game and ability to change gears. Get those right first then you’ll feel like you can stand toe to toe with the pros.

just an update, i took the T$ and played in a 4$ rebuy and the 55 nightly 70 k, lost in both, but after that started playing some sng's and had two paydays over 100$ in those so basically i have won about 250$ from using the T$ and still have about 65 T$ left, it seems like a pretty good return, that basically would have been a cash in the sunday million right?

nice work! i definitely think you did the right think in taking the $T given how significant it was to your roll.
looks like your BR got a nice little boost and you are using it to good effect, keep up the good work
