Hey,

V was new to the table so no reads.

they've opened up from LP , so i'm assuming their range wil be pretty wide here, however they've opened like 5bb pre , not sure what to make of this?

don't like flatting here at all , so i think this is either shove or fold or 3-bet call of course.

3bet shoving for 30bb over nearlly a 6x can never be called a 'standard' play.

What range do you give him when he makes this sizing?

And of that range, what range is he calling a shove with?

What equity does 99 have against his calling range?

calling with 88+ AQs+ AQo+

against that range we have 41.33% equity.

	Equity	Win	Tie
UTG	58.67%	57.77%	0.90%	{ 88+, AQs+, AQo+ }
UTG+1	41.33%	40.43%	0.90%	{ 9h9s }

You now have all the variables to make an informed decision as to the correct play.

Use the below formulae:

cEV = (chips we win when villain folds x frequency this happens) + (chips we win when villain calls x frequency this happens) – (chips we lose when villain calls x frequency this happens)

If you need any help with any part of the above formulae feel free to ask.

Yeah feel free to add me. Same name as here on the forum

For the formula I will outline it anyway so that other users that see this topic can use it also.

For now, we will call the formula cEV = (A) + (B) + (C)

(A) = Amount of chips we win when villain folds x (combo of hands villain folds / total combo of hands villain raises preflop)

(B) = Total pot when called x our equity in the pot.                          Our equity is how often we win the hand

(C) = Amount of chips we lose, i.e. our stack x villains equity.

If he made a standard 2/3 x raise a 3 bet would be fine out of position. But his 6 x raise makes your 3 bet too expensive & the shove is very high risk since neither of you are in panic mode (below 10 bb’s). So by default, although it sounds weak, you can afford to flat call here. Turns out the 9 hit but it’s a flush heavy board, still a very tricky spot, but your opponent should be thinkng the same thing & you have a good chance to reach the river with no extra bets & win the pot most times.

I think 99 is a bad flat here as we dont have immediate set mining odds and a pair like 99 flops so many overcards you dont really know where you are at in the hand. Therefore it becomes a 3bet shove or a fold. Given his sizing tho you need to have a read on villain or have a pretty nailed down range on his open as to make it profitable. If he only makes this sizing with premiums it will become a -EV shove.

Also i disagree with your comment that its a high risk shove because no one is in panic mode. 3betting <10 bb makes villains price too inexpensive to call and he can call with a wider range when we shove ~10bb. The best stack for 3bet shoving is between 14-20 and can even go a little bigger.

I also disagree with the flush heavy board allowing you a good chance to reach the river without extra bets. Villain or hero are going to bet their draws in order to win the pot on earlier streets, especially if they dont have showdown value.

Fair enough. I’m pleased somebody gave an alternative to my idea which will no doubt have flaws in that spot. I’m looking to pick up on improvements, but it would take some persuading for me to fold 9-9 when it’s deep stacked even from the SB.
Regards shoving? We’ll I have 50 bb’s facing an overbet from an opponent who has 30 bb’s. Without any reads do i really want to gamble with him for all my chips?
Enjoying these comments though so I don’t care if I’m way off long as I can read back & see my own basic errors corrected.
Come on TPE Pros, what should we do in this spot?

yeah , Given the effective stacks, we're pretty deep to be 3-bet shoving , espically with no reads.

if we know v opens up a wider range , then 3-bet shoving here is profitable,  if we think they are opening a tighter range like AQs+ 77+ then shoving here would be -ev , 4 shur.

so yeah looking back at this hand , it's fold pre.

Obviously a practice I need to work on, especially from small blind.
Where was that Fold button again? 🙂

The range you're putting him on seems pretty incorrect one way or another unless you've seen that his standard (90%) of his opens are 5.5x… You think he opens AA and 22 to 5.5x..??  Really..??? I just think that range is super arbitrary and makes as much sense as him opening to 5.5x… What to make of it… I'd take the top of the range out and probably the bottom… I think that range needs real work before you even plug anything into a calculator.

From my experience these opens are more or less always the same. Villain usually has AK or AQ here and he opens 5x to protect his hand and there is no need to play post flop, because rest of the table folds or 3bet shoves. On BTN I am calling this and see what flop brings and play OP, from SB I rather fold and wait for better chance.
